Grade 7 Advanced Reading

 Standard: LFAS.7.RI.2.5 Analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text, including how the major sections contribute to the whole and to the development of the ideas.  Objectives:  I can identify the structure an author uses to organize a text.  I can analyze how the structure of the major sections contribute to the overall meaning of the text.

 http://aeon.co/video/society/landfill-harmonic-a-short-film-about-the-recycled- orchestra-of-cateura/ http://aeon.co/video/society/landfill-harmonic-a-short-film-about-the-recycled- orchestra-of-cateura/  After watching the video clip, take a moment to write your opinion. What do you think about what you just learned? (1-2 sentences on the inside cover of your blue booklet)

 As we read we are going to work to determine how the author structures the text.  Remember that text structure could be cause/effect, compare/contrast, sequential order etc…  As we read we are also going to look at how the structure contributes to the meaning or development of the text.  We are going to work on understanding new words or phrases as we find them using context clues or word parts to help us determine their meaning.  We know we are looking at how parts of the text contribute to the text as a whole so lets preview the text. Find the title, headings or sub headings, images, captions etc…

 I am going to read the section titled “We’re doing the impossible”  How does the author structure the text in this section?  Lets look at the next section “Making dreams a reality”  Lets do the same steps we did with the previous section-  Predict how do you think they are making dreams a reality? Record your prediction next to the heading in your booklet.  I am going to read the section aloud while you read along in your booklet. As we read you are working to answer the question: How does the author structure the text in this section?

 How does the author structure this section?  What details from the text support your answer?

 Now you are going to read the section titled “A new meaning to my life”  Lets do the same steps we did with the previous section-  Predict why do you think this could create new meaning in my life?  Record your prediction next to the heading in your booklet.  You need to read the section. As you read you are working to answer the question:  How does the author structure the text in this section?  You will need to have specific examples from the text to support your answer.

 Please answer these questions and turn them in before you leave class today.

 On the inside front cover of your booklet write a brief 1-2 sentence summary of what the article “A Way out of the Landfill” was about.

 Yesterday we identified the text structure and answered some questions on how the parts of the article supported the central idea.  Today as you read you are going to look for some specific cause and effect relationships.  Complete the cause and effect chart on pg. 4 in your booklet.

 After reading the article a second time, read the quote at the top of the page:  “Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving, we get stronger and more resilient.” Steve Maraboli. How does the orchestra help the children of Caterua become stronger and more resilient?  Answer questions 2-5 on page 4.
