What is culture? In this presentation, the term culture is defined within its socio-economic and political context and as part of such a context. It is viewed as a dynamic process within a given social context in which individuals are in a constant struggle for representation and the need to have an authentic voice. (e.g. Sehlaoui, 1999; Giroux, 1992; Quantz, 1992)

Data Analysis Data analysis was, in part, concurrent with data gathering. The listening and re-listening to the tape- recording of the interviews, classroom observation field notes, and the continuous examination of the MA TESOL program documents allowed me to understand the philosophies that underlie processes by which CCCC was developed in this program. The critical perspective of data analysis allowed me to observe, again and again, the learning and the teaching practices of ESL/EFL pre- service teachers and ESL/EFL teacher educators to answer the research questions in this study.
8
Research Questions How is computer technology discussed and conceptualized among students as part of their socialization process in the program? How is this technology integrated in the TESOL program?
9
Setting The natural context in which the present research project was carried out was the English Department at a state university. The target program on which the study was done is the MA TESOL program with a focus on ESL/EFL pre-service teachers and ESL/EFL teacher educators' classroom learning/teaching practice. In order to ensure the quality of data collected in this research study and to provide for triangulation procedures, four sources of data were used.
10
A data-based socio- cultural Analysis: Computer Technology, Culture, and Power Critical Views of cultural power relations and CALL Uncritical views of cultural power relations and CALL Uses of metaphors in CALL
11
Recommendations and Pedagogical Implications Use CALL in structured learning environments (not just as an add-on). Develop effective critical technological competence. Use CALL to democratize the educational process and empower the powerless. Educate teachers to become not only critical but transformative intellectuals.
