2 CEED in Camden County – since 1996 Federal and State Program for early detection of cancer and education for prevention Screening for Breast Cancer & Cervical Cancer in women; Prostate Cancer in men; & Colorectal Cancer Entitlement program: less than 250% of poverty level by income; no health insurance or underinsured for health

3 Meeting the gaps in Cancer Services – Eliminate Health Disparities CEED meets the need of working people with no health insurance for early detection and screening Estimate of the number of eligible women <250% of poverty level for income = 7,033 who are 40-64 years of age but do not have an estimate for men. Women diagnosed with Breast Cancer or Cervical Cancer – are Medicaid eligible for treatment phase Do not have Medicaid eligibility for men diagnosed with prostate cancer nor for colorectal cancer

4 Progress since 2003 The funding to screen only covered 18% of the eligible population. (12% Federal and 6% additional from State) In 2004 report, Camden County CEED met this goal, covering 18% of the eligible Women. McGreevey doubled the State funding in 2004 Thus 24-30% of the eligible population should be getting services in 2005.

5 Background to Camden County CEED program Camden County has two Cancer Education and Early Detection Programs (CEED) – Cooper Hospital, since 1996, and Virtua Health - Voorhees, 2001. Both have met their targeted number of enrollments of women but have struggled to reach their targeted number of men How well do they reach the eligible population of working people with incomes <250% of poverty with no health insurance?

8 Colorectal and Prostate Cancer Screening through CEED Eligible men for CEED not known 65+ census in Camden County showed almost 5,000 (9.6%) living below the poverty line Women 65+ = 9% and Men 65+ = 4.7% 8 municipalities have >10% of individuals living below the poverty line No Health Insurance: 7.6% White; 16.9% Black; 38.2% Hispanic

9 In 2004-2005 CEED Clients Colorectal Cancer Screening in women= 216 men = 69 Prostate Cancer Screening in Men = 68 Issues for increasing these two Cancer Screenings - estimating the target group - planning the intervention - education, more education
