Who were the Navajo? The word Navajo comes from the Indians, meaning “farmlands or planted fields” The Navajo lived in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado.

2 Who were the Navajo? The word Navajo comes from the Indians, meaning “farmlands or planted fields” The Navajo lived in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. Its called the four corner region because its takes up the four meeting corners of the states.

3 What did the Navajo eat? They were farmers, hunters and gatherers. They tended sheep and planted corn, which was very important to them. They also grew beans, squash, pumpkin and fruit.

4 What did the Navajo Wear? When it was cold outside, they wore clothing made from sheepskin, deerskin and wool. Men wore breechcloths, which are like pants, and cover their bottom half. Women wore skirts made out of woven yucca fiber. They also wore deerskin ponchos in cold weather, and moccasins on their feet. They had very colorful clothing.

6 What did the Navajo homes look like?? Navajo homes were called hogans, which are traditional earth houses. They were made out of wood and clay, and dome shaped, which helped protect them from strong winds and weather. The door was always facing the east, which is where the sun rises.

8 The Navajo Art: The Navajo are famous for their jewelry, and they made belts, necklaces, earrings, and rings from sterling silver. They also made sand paintings, which are paintings of fine colored sand, on a neutral background. They also made wool blankets, which were very colorful and had many patterns. Since they lived in an area where clay was a natural resource, they used clay to make pots.
