NCSX NCSX CDR May 21-23, 2002 Larry Dudek Slide 1 Facility Systems (WBS 62-65) L. Dudek, G. Gettelfinger, M. Kalish

NCSX NCSX CDR May 21-23, 2002 Larry Dudek Slide 2 Facility Systems  Water Systems (WBS 62)  Cryogenic Systems (WBS 63)  Utility Systems - GN 2, Air, Vent (WBS 64)  Helium Bakeout (WBS 65)

NCSX NCSX CDR May 21-23, 2002 Larry Dudek Slide 3 Water Cooling System Requirements  Provide water cooling for –NBI –Torus vacuum pumping –Helium bakeout system –Diagnostics  Work scope involves adding cooling loops that tie into existing CS/HVAC water systems

Water Systems P&ID

NCSX NCSX CDR May 21-23, 2002 Larry Dudek Slide 5 Cryogenic System Requirements  Provide GN2 cooling to cool the coils and structures inside the cryostat from ambient (293K) to operating (80K) temperature  Provide GN2 cooling of the structures inside the cryostat during operation  Provide closed loop LN2 cooling for modular, TF, and PF coils during operation  Provide GN2 heating to bring the coils and structures inside the cryostat back to ambient

NCSX NCSX CDR May 21-23, 2002 Larry Dudek Slide 6 LN2 Coil Cooling Hermetic Suction/Expansion Tank Field Coil Flow Paths 45 @ 15 lpm (4 gpm) P P Field Coil Heat Exchanger Closed, Pressurized Primary Open, Boiling Secondary PX TX.36 MPa (52 psia) For 90 K Ops P LN2 MAKEUP From LN2-LHe Supply System (WBS 6311) Secondary in GN2 Cryostat Cooling System (WBS 633) P- Pump PX - Pressure Transmitter TX - Temperature Transmitter

NCSX NCSX CDR May 21-23, 2002 Larry Dudek Slide 8 LN2 Storage and Delivery  Cryogenic heat loads are modest –Cooldown Two (2) 6,500 gallon trucks –Bakeout (150C VV) 15.3 kW, 2.3 trucks per week –Not operating (20C VV) 10.5 kW, 1.6 trucks per week –Operating (20C VV) 4.6 trucks per week based on 160 full power shots per week  Existing 9,000 gallon LN2 tank will be re-used

NCSX NCSX CDR May 21-23, 2002 Larry Dudek Slide 9 Helium Bakeout System Requirements  Heat and maintain VV at 150C during bakeout –12 kW heat loss to cold mass  Maintain VV at 20C during normal operation –7 kW heat loss to cold mass  Heating CFC liner for 350C bakeout is a future upgrade

Helium bakeout system  Patterned after NSTX  High pressure system (270 psig) for high He density  Industrial blower (low  P) inside pressure vessel more economical than compressor  24 kW available NCSX Cooling Water Pressure Regulating Valve Orifice RV Blower Assy. Bypass Valve 32 C 155 kW 19 C 127 C 165 C 150 C 56 C 62 kW 60 kW 24 kW 21 kW 250 psi 270 psi Heater HEX #1 HEX #2

NCSX NCSX CDR May 21-23, 2002 Larry Dudek Slide 11 Blower and Motor with Housing Retracted (NSTX Skid)

NCSX NCSX CDR May 21-23, 2002 Larry Dudek Slide 12 Facility Systems Cost and Schedule Facility Systems will be made operational in time for subsystem testing WBS Cost w/o Cont Cont% Cont $

NCSX NCSX CDR May 21-23, 2002 Larry Dudek Slide 13 Conclusions  Cost, schedule, and technical risks have been minimized in Facility Systems –Adapting an existing design minimizes risks in the Helium Bakeout System (WBS 65) –Having LN2 delivered instead of having on-site refrigeration greatly simplifies the Cryogenic Systems (WBS 63) design –Facility Systems are designed with commercial, off-the-shelf components utilizing standard construction techniques
