1. ISAE Mission o To impart innovative teaching, learning and research in various branches of agriculture and animal husbandry and produce well skilled and qualified technicians in response to global needs of the Community. o Contribute to food security, poverty reduction and economic development in Rwanda, through: training, research, technology transfer and community services

2. ISAE and IPER In 2009: An MoU was signed between ISAE and Wageningen International: Cooperatives and agribusiness: collection and analysis of socio- economic data”. Three commodities were targeted: cassava, maize, honey 18 students participated under supervision of 3 ISAE lecturers

ISAE and IPER, Ctd… o 18 reports were produced by students: 11 reports on Cassava 4 reports on Rice 2 reports on Honey 1 report on Maize This database revealed to be useful for all actors interested. In 2010: There was no action performed due to the absence of demands from different PEAs

3. ISAE and BAIR 2009-2010: MoU signed with ISAE Objective: Identification of soil fertility- related constraints and solutions for increased crop productivity. Areas: Gakenke, Musanze, Nyabihu, Ngororero and Rubavu (N.W.) Commodities : maize,potato,wheat, vegetables (Cabbage, tomato, carrot), fruits (pineapple, maracuja).

ISAE and BAIR contd. Results: - soil physical and chemical analyses made; - fertilizer rates and best cultivation practices for each commodity defined. Way forward: Confirmation of results by field demonstration trials.

4. ISAE and Commodity chain development ISAE is engaged in community service activities ISAE is one of implementing partners of Sub Saharan Africa Challenge Program in Lake Kivu Pilot Learning Site. Lecturers and students are involved according to their department field of specialization Project sites are located in Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo

In Rwanda activities are centred around potato and maize production(clean seed use, fertiliser application, and planting density); Milk value chain (milk value chain development) In DR Congo, activities are concerned in packaging and value addition for enhancing economic benefits from climbing beans and potato for enhancing economic benefits. ISAE and Commodity chain development, ctd… For potato, with farmers participation demonstration plots were established a)Fertiliser application: type, time and quantity 750g of NPK + organic manure applied while sowing/planting; NPK fragmented doses: 375g at planting time then 375g after 21 days + organic manure; NPK with fragmented doses: 375g after 21 days then 375g when earthing up + organic manure Use of organic manure only;

5. Focus on potato chain development ISAE like other partners is concerned with the development of Potato commodity chain. A comprehensive project was elaborated and will be implemented in collaboration with MINAGRI. Activities include: Seed production: 94 tons per year Production: participatory training on GAP (manual are elaborated)

Focus on potato chain development, Ctd… Post harvest handling practices and technologies (washing, grading, packaging Market search and marketing (contract negotiation, Outgrowing scheme) Our goal: Participation in making of potato a much more professional and income generating business. This is possible with farmers and other actors commitment.

6. ISAE and Community services ISAE is involved in different community services in partnership with MINAGRI, Districts (Gakenke, Nyabihu) and cooperatives Different competencies are available in different fields: Animal production/health Crop production/Horticulture Soil and water management Rural development/agribusiness Food technology

Together, we can make use of those competencies to make agri business’ dream a reality. PEAs are encouraged to formulate their demands
