The outline – Organizational Patterns
Organize your ideas in a logical way. Some ideas: time/chronological order the information is organized based on sequence in what order do the steps go? most common in process speeches narrative order similar to time but is about a story what happened first, second, etc. in the story? topic order most common way to organize organized by categories

Step 1: Review your specific speech goal
the specific thing you want your audience to leave knowing about “I want to inform my audience that/about ________________________________” I want to inform my audience about the benefits of participating in community service activities.

Step 2: Write a thesis Thesis – 1-2 sentences that identify the specific speech goal and previews the main points of the speech INEFFECTIVE THESIS: I want my audience to know that community service is important. EFFECTIVE THESIS: Community service is important because it helps increase self-esteem, offers networking and job opportunities, and is required for graduation.

Step 3: Identify The Main Points
The first step to organizing the information for your speech is to identify the MAIN POINTS. What topics are you going to be talking about in your speech? Consider your specific speech goal when beginning to outline your speech: I want to inform my audience about the benefits of participating in community service activities.

MAIN POINTS: the big topics that you will be talking about in your speech SUBPOINTS: the supporting details that help you explain those main points

An example is the Applebee’s Event where students were recognized by the Township with a certificate. II. The second benefit is that community service provides networking and job opportunities. A. Volunteering can sometimes connect you with local businesses. 1. This allows you to show companies that you have skills. 2. You also can learn new skills jobs want employees to have.
