Hong Kong, 7 October 2000 Infrastructures1 Infrastructures for Global Collaboration Welcome Purpose of the workshop 7 Presentations (9:15 - 11:00) BREAK (11:00 - 11:15) 3 Presentations (11:15 - 12:00) Discussion (12:00 - 12:55) Conclusions (12:55 - 13:00)

Hong Kong, 7 October 2000 Infrastructures2 Why this workshop? Observations –NL and Speech processing require collaboration, because of the complexity of the tasks and the crossing of language boundaries –Free floating collaboration is possible, but is often facilitated by infrastructures that help people in teaming up

Hong Kong, 7 October 2000 Infrastructures3 What doe we mean by infrastructures? Every organised action with some continuity aiming at bringing people working in the same field together Different types, different possibilities: –open/closed (only for specific political, thematic or linguistic communities) –top-down/bottom-up –funding/supporting/co-ordinating

Hong Kong, 7 October 2000 Infrastructures4 Should we create new infrastructures? Not our starting point! Let us: –make (and publish) a structured map of existing infrastructures –investigate whether we can exploit them better (stretching them, linking them up) –analyse whether additional infrastructures would be needed, and if so, how they could be implemented

Hong Kong, 7 October 2000 Infrastructures5 Our goals today Start creating a map of infrastructures (with special focus on Asia) Identify possible hooks for collaboration and synergies Make an initial analysis of the infrastructure situation Ensure that this is the start of an ongoing discussion in which the whole community can participate
