PM emissions from mobile Sources a vehicle producer‘s perspective Giovanni Margaria, ACEA presented by Dr. Michael Mrowietz, VW Workshop of the UN/ECE Task force on Integrated Assessmant Modeling on the Potential and Costs for Controlling Primary Emissions of Fine Particulate Matter IIASA, Laxenburg, Nov. 2000

ACEA The European Automakers The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), founded in 1991, represents the interests and combined skills of 13 European car, truck and bus manufacturers at EU level. Through an extensive network of individual experts from Member companies ACEA has access to a wealth of expertise at all level of the industry. The Association provides this expertise as an input during the dialogues with legislators, regulators and other EU authorities. This permits effective interaction with decision-makers and partner organizations and encourages understanding of the diverse industry issues.

As a result of the exhaust reduction emission from the motor vehicles the road transport will not be the major polluter. Continued improvement in the automobile sector will require more investment for relatively minor results. Emission reductions from other sources will provide greater and more cost-effective contribution to air quality in the future. Auto Oil II Emission Base Case

ACEA Programmes On Fine Particles 1998-1999 Programme on fine particles from passenger cars. To compare conventional and advance in Diesel engine technologies of current passenger cars regarding size distribution, number and mass of particle emissions. 1999-2000 Study of Fine Particle Emissions from Heavy Duty Diesel Engine. Comparison of particle emissions from different heavy duty engines and aftertreatment systems.

ACEA remark - As it is expected that future policies will focus on PM it should be noted that major uncertainties exist regarding the PM inventories. With respect to road transport in particular on non-diesel PM. Emission Base Case Version 5

Present ACEA Project On PM Emissions An other programme on fine particles from passenger cars is under discussion at present. The objectives of this programme are: –To examine the influence of PM emissions over an extendes range of engine technologies and measurement conditions. –To investigate whether PM characterization techniques influence the measurement results.

Particulate Matters (PM) Five areas need to be studied concerning the PM: Characterization of the motor vehicle PM emissions. “Life” of particles in the air. Integration of PM reaction dynamics in transport models Health effects of the particles. Effect of secondary PM on ambient air quality
