Initiation Describe a time in your life when you worked together with someone to achieve a common goal. What kind of relationship did you have to have with that person? What would have happened if that person wasn’t around to help out?

Unit 7 Ecology Discussion 7.2

Objectives SWBAT...identify the interactions that occur within communities. SWBAT...identify the characteristics of major biomes.

Key Questions What interactions occur within communities? What are the unique characteristics of the world’s major biomes?

Words To Live By... biotic factor abiotic factor niche symbiosis mutualism commensalism parasitism biome

Key Points Biotic and abiotic factors determine the survival and growth of in organism in a particular ecosystem. Community relationships, such as competition, predation, and various forms of symbiosis, can powerfully affect an ecosystem. The world has several major biomes that consist of complex comunities interacting with various biotic and abiotic conditions.

Biotic and Abiotic Factors Biotic Factors: Abiotic Factors: In the following picture, name the biotic and abiotic factors? Biotic means LIVING Abiotic means NONLIVING

Niche An organisms niche is the specific role it plays in its environment. What does this organisms eat? What physical conditions are required for it to survive? When and how does this organism reproduce? Slugs, Earthworms, Fish, Toads Semi-Aquatic, Lots of places to hide. Mating occurs in the spring. Females give birth to live young.

Community interactions have a powerful affect on am ecosystem! Two common interactions are Competition and Predation. Which one is which??? Describe.

Symbiosis Symbiosis is any relationship in which two organisms live closely together. 3 Types of Symbiosis Mutualism Commensalism Parasitism As you watch the video, come up with your own definitions of the three types of mutualism. http://www.5min.com/Video/Interspecific-Associations- Symbiosis-151425985

Symbiosis and Homework You and your friend have decided to work on a major project for biology class together. Describe the situation if: Mutualism was occurring... Commensalism was occurring... Parasitism was occurring...

Types of Mutualism

Types of Commensalism
