Habitat vs. Community vs. Ecosystem Habitat – Particular environment in which an organism normally lives Ex. Desert, salt marsh, lake, coral reef, stream, prairie, rain forest, tundra, etc. Community – All the different species within a habitat Ex. Trees, mice, rabbits, wolves, fungi of a forest Ecosystem – All of the living (biotic) AND nonliving (abiotic) factors of an area along with the members of the community
4
First Let’s Review Different ecosystems have different organisms living there All ecosystems have abiotic and biotic factors – Abiotic= nonliving Ex. Temperature, rainfall – Biotic = living Ex. Plants, animals, bacteria
7
Today’s Activity Create a powerpoint or prezi presentation to teach the rest of the class about a specific ecosystem and a possible food web that can be found there Step 1 – Roll the dice to determine what type of ecosystem you will be researching – 1- Tropical rainforest – 2- Desert – 3- Deciduous Forest – 4- Coniferous Forest – 5- Artic – 6- Ocean
8
Today’s Activity (cont) Step 2 – Research plants and animals from this ecosystem and identify/describe (pictures and text) at least: – Two Producers – Three Primary consumers – Two Secondary consumers – One Tertiary (third) consumer – One Decomposer Step 3 – Research at least two abiotic factors that make your ecosystem unique (ex. Extremely low rainfall in desert)
10
Requirements One ecosystem (from dice roll) presented Slides (pictures + text descriptions) for at least – Two Producers – Three Primary consumers – Two Secondary consumers – One Tertiary (third) consumer – One Decomposer At least two slides (pictures + text descriptions) for TWO abiotic factors (ex. Temperature and rainfall) that make your ecosystem unique This powerpoint will be worth 20 classwork/participation points (same as our giant paper food web group project previously)
