2 R.I.S.E. – opportunities to progress * Recovery training: people manage their condition, develop life skills, develop their goals, plan. * Self-help sustains recovery, strengthens social network, continued group support from trainers. * Voluntary opportunities: a way of ‘giving back’ and moving on. Give people “breaks”. * Job-skills training, job-related skills: natural progress, IPS model, soft skills & hard skills. Towards job market. Perkins Review (2009). * Individual advice: bespoke service for greater progress, person-centred, for recovery and resolution of barriers towards job market.

3 The journey of recovery * A deeply personal, unique process of changing one’s attitudes, values, feelings, goals and/or roles … a way of living a satisfying, hopeful and contributing life even with the limitations caused by the illness..the development of new meaning and purpose in one’s life as one grows beyond the catastrophic effects of mental illness (Anthony, 1993). * In-Sight: a growth through the breakdown and a growing mastering of illness management with resultant reduction of symptoms ie. full recovery. => Outcome: progression of recovery journey & need for ‘breaks’ ie opportunities & life chances to develop further.

5 R.I.S.E. – multi-modal package Recovery & Employment Recovery In- Sight training Self-help for on-going support Goal-planning for employment Individual legal, benefits/debt & employment advisory sessions Practical voluntary placements in office Job-skills training, Job- related skills guidance Job-seeking skills support User-led, social enterprise, recovery values in action.

6 What do users want? Herts Day Opportunities Review 2009 – 26% want life skills training 36% want peer support groups 34% want training & educational opportunities 35% want voluntary opportunities/paid work 56% of users want more opportunities to run their own services => provided within R.I.S.E.

7 Progress The majority self-manage well, several managed crises All develop interests (voluntary work, leisure, study) Several return to full-time study (nursing, nutrition) Many involved in the In-Sight project (trainers, office workers, volunteers) Some return to work elsewhere (part or full-time) Some change jobs (more accommodating to m.h. needs) Many more open about m.h. needs to current employers R.I.S.E.: user-led, social enterprise, empowering, wellbeing at work in practice, self-management a priority. => Greater rate of return to unsupported work with new services & greater recovery leading to greater resilience in the workplace.
