1 First 9 Weeks Academic Objectives for Language Arts Communication Expresses needs and ideas in a complete sentence using a least four words. Alphabet knowledge Recognizes letters and sounds. Nn, Aa, Pp, Uu, Ee, Mm. Identifies words that begin with sounds that have been taught. Recognizes letters in his/her name. Reading Listen and comprehend stories read to them. Respond appropriately to questions asked about the story. Recalls details from the story. Begins to identify the parts of the book: front cover, back cover, spine, title, title page, author, and illustrator. Writing Begins to write name independently. Begins to draw to express ideas.

2 First 9 Weeks Academic Objectives for Math Recognizing Colors Rote count to 10 Number recognition: Recognize numbers 1, 2 and 3. Form groups of 3. Count one by one. (one to one correspondence) Recognize that the last number counted represents the total amount of the group (cardinality). If your child can’t tell you how many they just finished counting then he/she has not mastered this objective. Recognize which number is greater or less than.

3 First 9 Weeks Academic Objectives for Social Studies Your child and their school Talk to your child about the activities that took place in school and practice vocabulary related to: Places in school: library, cafeteria, gym, office, nurses office, and computer lab. Daily Classroom Routine: independent activities, calendar, stories, bilingual centers, working with your bilingual pairs, days you go to the playground etc. Friends Talk to your child about what a friend is, how to treat a friend and the values related to friendship: respect, friendliness, cooperation, sharing, helping, etc. Show your child how to defend or stand up for themselves using their words. They need to be able to say in a clear and firm voice, “No, stop, I don’t like it.”

4 First 9 Weeks Academic Objectives for Science Personal Hygiene and Security: Talk to your child about the importance of following safety procedures in school (fire drill, Code B). Practice vocabulary related to the parts of the body. It is important for your child to recognize the importance of personal care: bathing daily, brushing teeth, washing hands, wiping their nose with a tissue and sneezing in their elbow. Describing Objects: Students should be able to use their 5 senses (sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing) to describe the color, shape, size, texture and temperature of objects. Practice vocabulary related to these concepts at home.

5 Fine Motor Skills Practice: Practice using scissors. You may start by folding paper (magazines from store or scraps of paper) and helping your child cut along the formed line. If your child has difficulties correctly holding the pencil, use broken crayons to practice the correct pincher grip. Demonstrate and help your child draw. Start with simple shapes, circles and lines. Show your child how to color inside the lines and how to use appropriate colors. ( The sun is not green). Place a piece of paper on the wall so that your child can color and trace letters, this helps strengthen hand muscles and encourages correct hand position for writing.

6 HAND WRITING WITHOUT TEARS Writing from : -top to bottom -left to right -use small crayons -promotes the pincher grip (three finger grip).
