(George Murdock) customs and practices that occur in all societies Cultural Variation: the existence of different rules and practices in different societies Acculturation: cultural modification of an individual, group, or people by adapting to or borrowing traits from another culture a merging of cultures as a result of prolonged contact Social institution: a set of organized beliefs and rules that establish how a society will attempt to meet its basic social needs

Cultural survival (marriage is valued in most societiesas it is a tool to reinforce traditions through teaching of children) Strengthening the culture (when people marry within their own culture they bond 2 extended families and reinforce culture) Attraction/ sexual behaviour (maintaining stable/loving relationships) Companionship (meets psychological needs ie: emotional support, friendship, meets self esteem needs) Economics (combination of 2 financial sources and strengthens those of extended families)

In Upper and Lower Canada marriage governed by economic factors Age of Industrialization 19th century economic and social background/ class. (Introduced and chaperoned by families etc.) 1920s dating started when youth challenged traditions Today… romantic- marry someone you love Much more accepting definition of marriage
