Module 6 Questioning Skills
2
There are 2 Parts to questioning skills
Diagnosis Teaching
3
Diagnosis = The tutor asks questions to locate the source of confusion.
Teaching= The tutor uses questions to lead the tutee toward correct use of application.
4
6.1 There are 2 types of questions
Open Ended Closed Ended
5
Open ended questions require more thought and are more useful in getting the tutee to verbalize his/her ideas. Closed ended questions can be answered with a specific word or phrase and require very little verbalization.
6
6.2 Bloom’s Taxonomy of the Cognitive Domain(different levels of understanding)
7
Memory Level Recalls Utilizes closed ended questions
This level is important- The tutor finds out if the tutee knows enough details to form larger concepts.
8
Comprehension Level Requires tutee to explain concept or form a reply to prove comprehension of the concept. Try this: After the tutor waits for conversation from tutee at the comprehension level, the tutor can then go back and ask questions at the memory level.
9
Application Level This level is where the tutee can use the concept or solution method in a problem situation. These would be open ended types of questions.
10
6.3 Socratic Questioning Questions used to lead tutee to correct concept Builds on tutee’s own ideas Is not a lecture Utilizes higher level thinking skills
11
Please respond to these questions when you email me that you have finished with this power point.
Are you familiar with Socratic Questioning? Are you aware if any of your professors use the Socratic Questioning techniques. Do you feel comfortable using open ended types of questioning? Does the course you tutor lend it self to open ended questioning?
