Going into labor During the Industrial Revolution Manufacturing replaced farming as a main source of work Spinning Jennies and power looms made unskilled labor, and child labor, popular The Factory System led to factories located on rivers, crowded cities, and a wage system The Factory System was caused by the War of 1812, and led to many wealthy businessmen

A Family Affair New England became perfect for factories due to its location and a willing labor force Samuel Slater, using British Technology, opened up his first spinning mill employing children and families

Friends in Lowell Places Francis Cabot Lowell built a factory combining spinning jennies and power looms Lowell also founded a Factory City for his Lowell Mills, employing farm girls living in boarding houses The Lowell Mills paid well at first and had strict rules to guide the girls but as profits fell working conditions worsened As factories improved, they ran on steam and coal power allowing them to be built away from waterways

Early Guns were made as whole units that could not be fixed Eli Whitney invented interchangeable parts to make guns more efficient Machines could make individual parts by the thousands and would speed up production of factory goods The new system led to low skilled workers and supervisors to inspect the produced goods

Robert Fulton invented the steamboat to improve transportation and cutting down travel time Henry Miller Shreve improved the steamboat to travel upstream on the Mississippi River Samuel F. B. Morse invented a way to communicate using wires and electricity By 1844 a telegraph could be sent from Baltimore to Washington DC By 1861 the Telegraph and steamboat helped bring our nation closer together

The Circle of Industrial Life John Deere invented a light weight plow to make farming easier opening up the Midwest to farming Cyrus McCormick’s reaper made it easier to cut ripe grain and his threshing machine made it easier to separate the wheat from the husks Improvements in Farming helped feed the growing cities that produced farm equipment to make farming easier
