2 Early Life Betty Sanders Born in Detroit, Michigan Abusive father
Taken into foster care Studied at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama Moved to New York, where she studied nursing at a Brooklyn hospital Friend took her to see Malcolm X speak and she was so impressed she began attending all his lectures and sermons

3 Life with Malcolm Married in 1958 Betty was 23 and Malcolm was 32
Six daughters: Attalla, Qubilah, Ilyasah, Gamilah, Malikah, and Malaak

4 Life After Malcolm Hajj to Mecca shortly after his death
Received half the royalties from The Autobiography of Malcolm X The Committee of Concerned Mothers raised funds to buy a house, and pay educational expenses for the Shabazz family The Committee held a series of benefit concerts and raised $17,000 for the family Began speaking at colleges and universities Completed her education degree and earned a masters in health administration Worked at Medgar Evers College as a teacher and then administrator till her death

5 Betty’s Death Malcolm Shabazz, Betty’s 12-year-old grandson, set fire to her apartment in June of 1997 He had been living with his grandmother, and was unhappy about being forced to live with his mother, Qubilah She suffered burns over 80 percent of her body and underwent five skin replacement operations She was in intensive care for three weeks until she died on June 23, 1997 In 1997, the Dr. Betty Shabazz Health Center was founded The Betty Shabazz International Charter School was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1998 In 2005, Columbia University announced the opening of the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center.
