Slideshow instructions for Coordinators (and others): There are 14 slides in this presentation, 4 of which are hidden. Slide 4 presents a menu of SEED’s programs (SNP, Online Science Center, Educational Programs, and Learning Materials). Slides 5-8 present individual overviews of each of those programs. These slides are hidden when in presentation mode. To view slides 5-8 in a presentation, click on the orange hyperlink arrows in Slide 4. The first arrow will take you directly to Slide 5 (School Network Program) When finished viewing Slide 5, click on the orange hyperlink return arrow to return to Slide 4. Repeat this process until ending up at Slide 8 (Learning Materials). Then continue with the presentation as normal. Slides 10 & 11 can be updated with your local country data (optional). If you decide not to use these slides, you should remove them from the presentation. Please note the hyperlinks only work when in presentation mode. Igniting passion for science and learning in youth and empowering them to use knowledge and technology creatively to meet the challenges of tomorrow. November 2009

2 SEED is … Education & Development
4/21/2017 SEED is … Education & Development SEED was founded in 1998 with the following considerations: to create a volunteer-based, non-profit educational development program serving youth aged to encourage Schlumberger people to make personal contributions to spark young people’s interest in science. to provide access to technological and knowledge resources for students and teachers in underserved communities where Schlumberger people live and work. to bring together young people from different cultures to share ideas and actions that benefit their communities. © 2009 Schlumberger Excellence in Educational Development, Inc. 3 SEED is … Empowering To Schlumberger employees:
4/21/2017 SEED is … Empowering To Schlumberger employees: SEED offers a platform for Schlumberger people to express their passion for science and learning. To students, teachers and their communities: SEED makes connections and fosters understanding among the world’s diverse individuals and communities. SEED benefits the communities where Schlumberger people live and work. It is a proud and integral expression of the global Schlumberger service culture. To Schlumberger: SEED helps motivate, retain and recruit employees who take pride in belonging to a company that cares about youth and education. SEED demonstrates to customers the Schlumberger values in action and employees’ voluntary commitment to creating opportunities for youth. © 2009 Schlumberger Excellence in Educational Development, Inc. Schlumberger core strengths and values that SEED is built upon: a knowledge of networking technology and of a range of science disciplines, a long-standing presence in over 80 countries of which 40+ are economically developing countries (re UNDP HDI) most importantly, the people who are willing and motivated to share their knowledge and time. Inequality of access to these technologies and the knowledge they distribute have widened the technology gap between the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ : the digital divide . 50% of world’s population [6.2 bn] has never used a telephone . 7% has access to a computer; 4% has access to the Internet . 20mhours of connectivity per month: US = 1% of salary; Mexico = 15%; Bangladesh = 278%; Madagascar = 614% Exponential growth but leaving countries and individuals behind might exacerbate inequality when there has perhaps never before been available such a powerful technology to eliminate inequalities and alleviate poverty and vulnerability Science learning: through the on-line Science Center and the interaction with practicing scientists and engineers who are passionate about their work, we want to encourage more personal, less alienating relationships with knowledge – promote an approach to learning that is joyful, process-oriented, life-long and a rich source of human interaction Generosity and humanity : SEED is an organizational vehicle through which Schlumberger people can contribute to the improvement of children’s chances to shape the forces and participate in decisions that affect their lives. It’s a means through which Schlumberger people can engage in human development and express one of the best of human attributes: the ability to act on concern for the well-being of others

Additional points: Scratch and other Logo Software can easily be used for projects in science, math, language, music, robotics and other fields of study. GoGo Board: acts as a link between a computer and a variety of sensors, like those that detect light or temperature, and as a control for simple motors, relays and displays. SEEDKITS: science activities that include material and instructions for projects to do with a teacher or SEED volunteer, on topics such as malaria, fruit power, road safety, smartwired, and viscosity. SEED also maintains SEEDLABs, ie., Schlumberger facilities that promote volunteer involvement and development of SEED activities and applications, located at SPC Sugar Land and at SRPC Clamart, and soon in Tyumen, Russia A SEEDKIT A GoGo Board

9 SEEDKITS Fruit Power SEEDKIT Viscosity SEEDKIT
Demonstrates the basic principles of generating electricity Students and teachers make their own batteries out of. simple kit materials and local fruit, such as lemons. © 2009 Schlumberger Excellence in Educational Development, Inc. Other SEEDKITS available today include: Fruit Power Viscosity Malaria and You SmartWired Connected Wisdom SEEDKITS coming soon: Evaporation Buoyancy Road Safety Solar Water Heater Water testing What is a SEEDKIT? Multimedia activities that enable volunteers and teachers to explore various science themes with students at local schools. Each SEEDKIT contains the materials and support documentation needed to conduct a Fruit Power workshop at a school. All of the content is available in seven languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish). Ordering a SEEDKIT Volunteers can order their own Fruit Power SEEDKIT from SWPS (Schlumberger people only) and the SEEDSTORE, or download it from the SEED Web site. The Fruit Power SEEDKIT The Fruit Power SEEDKIT is the first of five SEEDKITS ready for classrooms in 2009, with more to follow in 2010. A workshop using the Fruit Power SEEDKIT takes about 1-2 hours to complete with students aged 10-18, and requires familiarity with the basic principles of electricity and the relevant articles on the SEED Web site. The kit includes articles from the Online Science Center, such as Fruit Power, A Supersized Cell!, Build a Better Battery and How the Lemon Battery Works. The Viscosity SEEDKIT SEED created the “Viscosity” SEEDKIT so that volunteers and teachers can teach students about different liquids and their amazing properties. Viscosity SEEDKIT Participants can learn about the measure of a liquid’s resistance to flow and other interesting properities. Wet and sticky fun for everyone!

13 4/21/2017 SEED is … Meaningful SEED is part of our operations and it is as essential to Schlumberger principles as the air we breathe is to life. PDVSA and the communities respect us for our real efforts, which they see in the personal commitment and involvement of our volunteers. – Hatem Soliman, General Manager. Venezuela, Trinidad & Tobago, and Caribbean (VTT) From the bottom of my heart, SEED is beneficial to the community. In my opinion, SEED not only organizes educational programs but also makes someone’s dreams come true. – Simon Lim Kok Loong, SEED student, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia SEED continuously gives me the opportunity to experience the joy of learning and discovery with children. For every moment of time, energy, knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm that I give, I receive double the amount of joy in return. – Sylvia Sundqvist, SEED volunteer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil By addressing the desire of young people to express their creative talent, SEED has harmonized with their needs and provided an opportunity for them to express themselves while addressing global issues, such as water and climate change. – Svetlana Belova, SEED coordinator, Russia © 2009 Schlumberger Excellence in Educational Development, Inc.
