Why should we teach nutrition? Climbing obesity rates and inactivity To set a positive role model To satisfy the standards: NHES 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention. NHES 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks.

Obesity in America Today Children ages 2-5 15. 8 % are overweight 13. 5 % are obese Adults ages 18 + 64. 8 % are overweight 29. 6 % are obese

Why are we so overweight? Lack of exercise - Children are spending more and more time watching T.V. - Schools are cutting physical education Too many calories - sugary drinks, candy, chips, etc. Media - More than 33 % of food advertising is for candy and sweets - Less than 5 % of food advertising is for healthy foods

How does this affect our students? High blood pressure High cholesterol Asthma Sleep Apnea Joint pain Poor Self-Esteem Type 2 diabetes Lower I.Q’s

How obesity will affect our students later: Obese children are more likely to become obese adults A lifetime of bad eating habits can be damaging They will be at a higher risk for heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancer

How to influence our students: Be a good example Teach them all you can about healthy eating habits Encourage physical activity Make healthy eating fun!
