PRE/POST ASSESSMENT What is the overall function of a carbohydrate? Name the 3 different types of carbohydrates and give a food example for each. What indicator is used to test for the presence of glucose? Describe the test. What indicator is used to test for the presence of starch? Describe the test.
2
Why do you eat food?
3
Engage Activity Can you rank the carbohydrate food items from the food containing the least complex carbohydrate to the food containing the most complex carbohydrate? 1.Each group of students will receive a sack with 3 different carbohydrates (one monosaccharide, one disaccharide, and one polysaccharide. 2.When instructed, open the sack and organize the food items from the least complex to the most complex.

Living things take in macromolecules for life. Food Sources Come from PlantsAnimal Carbohydrates Elements C-H-O Lipids Elements C-H-O Proteins Elements C-H-O-N Quick Energy Ex. Monosaccharide Disaccharides Polysaccharides Stored Energy Ex. Cell Membrane, Fats, Waxes, Oils Growth and Repair Ex. Chains of amino acids Sun

CARBOHYDRATES INFORMATION GUIDELINE Three Types of Carbohydrates → Monosaccharides (monomer) Disaccharides (polymer) Polysaccharides (polymer) Common names of carbohydrates → Simple sugar Composed of only one monosaccharide Double sugars composed of two Monosaccharides Many sugars Chains of many glucose molecules Three main types of monosaccharides Three main types of disaccharides Three main types of polysaccharides Glucose Most common monosaccharide Found in all disaccharides and polysaccharides Common in grapes, honey, and high energy sports drinks Sucrose = Glucose + Fructose Common name is table sugar or cane sugar Found in table sugar, candy, cakes, syrup Cellulose Provides structure for plants – makes up cell walls Not digestible in humans Found in wood, paper, chewing gum Fructose Fruit sugar – found in fruits such as, oranges, peaches, plums, grapefruit, and fruit juices Maltose = Glucose + Glucose Malt sugar Found in milkshakes and malted milk Starch Storage form of glucose in plants Found in pasta, potatoes, cereal, corn, rice, cakes, cookies, and breads Galactose Never found alone in nature. Lactose =Glucose + Galactose Milk sugar (found in milk and milk products) Glycogen Storage form of glucose in animals Found in muscles and liver Chemical Formula → C 6 H 12 O 6 C 12 H 22 O 11 (C 6 H 12 O 6 )n Monomer- single sugar Polymer- two or more simple sugars bond together

CARBOHYDRATES – Group A Food Examples – Paste as many pictures of carbohydrates in this space Explore activity – In the presence of glucose and heat, Benedict solution will change from _________ to _________ in color. When iodine is added to starch, iodine will change from ________ to __________ in color. Hypothesis: If I test my unknown solution with ________________, then I can find out if my unknown is composed of ______________________________. Conclusion: My unknown substance is _________________ because __________________________________ 1. In nature, carbohydrates are: A. Plants only B. Animals only C. Both plants and animals Important carbohydrate facts: 2. Function is: _________________ 3. Common elements are _______, ________, & _________. Number of Unknown Glucose present + or - Starch present + or -

Anchor Activity Students will go to www.mypyramid.gov and research food choices, normal caloric intake for their age group and activity level, and will use this site to answer the questions in their anchor activity packet.www.mypyramid.gov The teacher can also download information about fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. to place in the anchor activity packet for students to use if they do not have access to a computer.
