1. The background for this ‘scary movie 4’ poster is black. This supports the main image as it makes it the central focus for the audience. It is also conforming to the basic genre conventions. There is an electric blue coloured orb behind the characters with a blue alien/ octopus in the middle. This could suggest a sci-fi genre to those who are new. The poster uses tongue and cheek. Other assumptions that support the suggestion of a sci-fi genre, is the monster entangled amongst the cast as well as the gorilla incorporated into the cast. De-notations to this film poster is one cannot be certain about the genre, if it was looked at without the film title. As we have various expressions form the actors and actresses on the poster. Connotations to this poster is the main image. Even though it is quite busy we are able to view all of the characters and pick out typical genre conventions I.e. The blonde as well as the other females. We have the scary monsters. Masked villain with tools of destruction and the extras that create build up to the main event. We know that the genre is a comedy thriller as the expressions of the cast are mixed and there is not much gore detailed on the poster I.e. blood close-up shot to convey meanings, there is a variety of colours used which brightens up the poster. The film title on the poster suggests the genre using the colour red which is associated with death, blood or danger. The tagline of the film plays with words and letters The tone seems threatening hence the idea of a comedy thriller or horror. The date of the films release is shown. In the poster there are common stereotypes of the genre based characters. Innocent, unaware, dumb blonde, a stripper and an isolated person who sticks out more than they do normally. We see particular traits through the characters mise- en-scene I.e. the stripper with the busty corset and fishnet tights, the villain with the mask, and in this poster the odd character whose t- shirt stands out. This character is holding a chopped of foot in his hand which links to the tagline ‘saw’

2. The background for this poster is bright we have the colours white, cream and hints of grey. This does not conform to typical dark horror backgrounds. The focus here is the main image. Colours for comedy are more light coloured. The trademark film title scary movie 4 is placed again at the bottom of the screen in its flamboyant red block capitals. However there is a difference with the four as this one is black to stand out from the background. This poster shows the release date of the film so the audiences are aware and can go and see the film from this date and thereafter. Connotative words playing along with the theme of the genre. We have an obvious insight into a comedy horror genre, as we have a large blue hello kitty sticker placed on one of the sawed off fingers. This is a pun as the fingers are chopped off already, a plaster would not help at all. In addition to this the tagline says ‘ The funniest thing you ever sawed.’ 3 dirty, sawed off fingers are put into the shape of the number four. To show what number the film is up to. The colour of the legs contrasts well with the background as they are similar colour. However. The connotation that is being represent ed here is the genre as well as the number. De-notations to this film poster is the use of the fingers, which is used to form the four and to convey the genre. However what we don’t what know is the link is to the film, we only see a suggestion to the tagline. The names of the production companies is placed on the poster again to credit their work. The tagline is written in black bold font to stand out on the plain background. The images on the poster refers to the tagline; “The funniest” is the plaster and “sawed” is the fingers. This is reinforcing the film posters meaning. The colours on the poster blend with each other. Whereas, the hello kitty plaster stands out because of the bold blue. Suggesting the comedy portrayal.

3. Again we have the repetition of the black background that enhances the project of the main image. This allows the fiery reds and yellows to stand out. The film titles name like my other two analysis, is placed at the bottom of the screen. This can be done because it is a well recognized logo that has been used from the very first film production and so on. The placement at the bottom is also ensuring not to take away from the main image. The release date of the film it is placed under the film title. The tagline in the poster reflects the images of the alien hands and the two worlds. The alien hands look like they are reaching out to grab the world which correlates with “ They’re coming.” The image of the world twice represents the audience and again reflects the tagline These are the companies of the films distributors. It is placed on the poster at the bottom to give them recognition. The tagline involves the audience viewing the poster. This is effective as it may persuade them to go and see the film, and in doing this they are showing support like the tagline says. The tagline is placed at the top of the film poster, whereas the other two analysis show the taglines at the bottom underneath the masthead, which is a common feature. This poster is repetition of poster two, with the use of hands. However the use of the hands does not convey the comedy/ horror genre. The suggestive genre is sci-fi because it looks like it comes from an alien and the two worlds are burning. If the film title was not there we would not be able to get the genre. In addition to this the hands are also repeated but in a zoomed focus from the monster in poster one. The colours used for the images on the poster are ; yellow, red, light, jade green and blue. The hands contrast with the colours used for the world. The use of the reds and yellows is to give the effect of the world burning and to emphasise the veins on the alien hands. There is not much of a de- notation to the poster as the images are portraying exactly what is written in the tagline. However, we do not know why they are coming and the image does not exactly show what is coming.

4. Again this poster reinforces the dark coloured background which represents the genres conventions. The colour black is dominant in this poster, it does not allow the hair to be defined front the background until it is seen covering the face. Repetition of the release date, which is again placed at the bottom, to take away from the image.
