1 4/11/07 Vocabulary 5.10 Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation: Law theorized by Isaac Newton that states that there is a force of attraction between all objects in the universe.

2 Newton’s Law of Gravitation
PS Explain how the gravitational force between two objects is affected by the mass of each object and the distance between them.

3 The Law of Gravitation Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation states that there is a force of attraction between all objects in the universe.

4 Who’s applicable? Everybody!
The Law of Universal Gravitation applies to all objects.

5 Between Two Objects... The force of attraction between any two objects: Force is greater when the mass of either of the two objects is greater. Earth, with its huge mass, has a relatively large attractive force with all of the objects near its surface.

6 The Moon's Gravity The moon has less mass than Earth, so the moon has less gravity! Gravity on the moon is 1/6 of Earth’s gravity Objects on the surface of the moon weigh less than on Earth because the gravitational force of the moon is less!

7 But my pencil isn't attracted to my pen...
The force that the earth exerts on objects is so great; the force of attraction between other objects is very small in comparison on the surface of the Earth.

8 Between two objects... The closer the two objects are, the greater the force. When an object such as a space vehicle moves away from Earth, the gravitational attraction becomes less and less.

9 No one is an island! Just as you are subjected to the Earth's gravitational force, the Earth is subjected to yours! But you only cause a tiny acceleration, yours goes completely unnoticed!

10 Tides Tides are created from the gravitational attraction between the Earth and the moon. The moon tries to pull at anything on the Earth, but, is only able to hold onto the water. Since the water is always moving, the Earth cannot hold onto it, and the moon is able to pull at it.
