Agenda 06/30/2010 Data table for photosynthesis lab Finish Natural Selection Add Vocab from yesterday Study quiz over Biosphere What is science Notes/Practice (Traits)
2
Data Table Photosynthesis Lab DayECSES 1Green, full leaf
3
Natural Selection Process where organisms that are more fit survive in the environment while others do not These fit traits may be passed on to the other generation Over time these fit traits may become dominate within the population changes the population
4
New Vocab Adaptation Natural Selection causes (selection factors) Natural Selection requirements Natural Selection Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection Lamarck's Theory of Acquired Characteristics
5
STUDY!!! Quiz over our Biosphere Last 2 Days
6
Science is based on 6 things!!! Consistent: – Performed/repeated by competent investigators – 1. Green plants will grow towards the sun – 2. Walking under a ladder will cause a bad luck Observable: – Event being studied can be observed and explained senses – 1. Some plants eat meat – 2. Extraterrestrial beings have visited Earth Natural: – Natural cause must be used to explain why or how the naturally occurring events. – 1. Green plants convert sunlight into energy – 2. Ms. P grades based on your energy color aura
7
Con’t CONPTT Predictable: – Natural causes explained by specific predictions – HYPOTHESIS!!! – 1. Without sunlight green plants will die. – 2. If you are a Scorpio, then your horoscope for today is… Testable: – Can be tested through the processes of science – SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY (METHOD) – 1. The Bermuda Triangle causes ships and planes to sink – Life comes from life and cannot come from non-life. Tentative: – Scientific theories can be changed and revised. – Can be proved WRONG! – List 3 theories in science that have changed!!!!
8
Theory vs. Hypothesis Hypothesis: an educated guess based upon observation. Most often comes from a passed conclusion that leads to a new problem. Theory: Best explanation for an observation. Verified by reported experimental testing, all evidence supports the theory, and none contradicts it. Law?: Not used so much anymore. Atomic Theory Copernican Theory Cell Theory Germ Theory Plate Tectonics Theory Evolutionary Theory Gravitation Theory
9
Theory vs. Hypothesis In teams discuss: How are they similar/different? Create a bull’s eye diagram.
10
Scientific Method Review Arrange the slips of paper in order! Hints: – Is it a straight line or circle? – Little words are associated with the larger words
11
Scientific Inquiry
12
Lab Report Form We WILL NOT be writing a formal lab report But we WILL: – Questioning – Predicting – Labeling variables – Designing ECS vs. ES – Working on Steps – Analyzing Data – Reading Graphs – Writing Conclusions
