1 Rational Numbers Math 7/8

2 Vocabulary Rational Numbers – All numbers EXCEPT non-terminating, non-repeating decimals. Numerator – Top number of a fraction Denominator – Bottom number of a fraction Repeating Decimal – A decimal that repeats Bar Notation – The symbol over a number showing a repeating decimal.

3 Vocabulary Improper Fraction – Numerator is larger than the denominator ( ) Mixed Number – Whole number and fraction written as one number (2½) Terminating - ending

4 Converting a Fraction to a decimal
Divide top number by bottom number. Common Fractions - ¼=.25,½=.5,¾=.75 and = .3, =.6 (repeating decimals) Converting a mixed number – leave the whole number, then divide the fraction part. Write this number after the decimal point. 6½ = ⅛ = 7.125

5 Inequality Symbols Greater than > Less than <
Greater than or equal to > Less than or equal to <

6 Comparing Numbers Turn all numbers to decimals to compare
The larger the decimal, the greater the number If one number is negative and the other is positive – the negative number is ALWAYS smaller (less than) The calculator will automatically round at the end of the calculator screen.

7 Converting Numbers Converting Decimals to Percents
Move the decimal point two places to the right. Converting Percents to Decimals Move the decimal point two places to the left. Converting Fractions to Decimals Divide the numerator by the denominator.
