Speed and Acceleration

What is Speed? The distance an object travels in a certain amount of time.

How do you calculate Speed? Speed is calculated by dividing the distance the object traveled by the time it took to travel that distance. Distance Speed = Time

Critical Thinking - Speed You will drive to a town that is 100km away. Half the trip you will be able to drive 100km/h (on the highway) and half the trip you will drive 50km/h (going through small towns). How long will it take you to get there? Show your work!

My How Times Have Changed!

Speed: Speed = Distance/Time What are two ways to increase speed? (Hint: Remember Newton’s 2 nd Law!) Let’s make up some distance and time values and calculate speed.

What is Velocity? Is both speed and direction. 40 km/hr = speed 40 km/hr west = velocity Can change velocity two ways –Change speed –Or change directions

What is Velocity? Calculate the total velocity for each of the passengers. Airplane: 800km/h west 4km/h west 5km/h east 0km/h west

What information must you know in order to calculate speed? What is the error in the following statement: –The velocity of the car is 55km/hr. Quick Review

How can motion be shown on a graph? You can show the motion of an object on a line graph in which you plot distance versus time. The slope of the graph tells you whether the object is moving fast, slow, or even at all.

How can motion be shown on a graph? 700 600 500 400 300 200 100 0 1234567 Distance (km) Time (h) Graph showing the speed of a car ---- Car 1 ---- Car 2 1.Which car is faster? Support your answer with data from the graph.

Speed Graph: The distance a runner traveled in 7 minutes. How far does she travel in 5 minutes? Is her speed constant? –How do you know?

Distance-Time Graphs Graph A:Graph B:Graph C:

Distance-Time Graphs Distance-time graph –The following graph shows the distance Kyle traveled on his bicycle trip and the amount of time it took him to travel that distance. During which 5-minute interval did Kyle achieve the greatest average speed? What may have happened between t = 10 and t = 15 minutes?

Ticket out the door! 1.What is speed? 2. What do you know about the motion of an object that has an average speed of 1 m/s? 3. What is the difference between speed and velocity?
