1 Platform – a political party’s statements or beliefs. Secede – to withdraw from the Union. Confederate States of America – created in February 1861 in Montgomery, Alabama from the states that seceded from the Union. (CSA) Jefferson Davis – President of the Confederate States of America (CSA) Crittenden Plan – planned amendments to the Constitution to protect slavery and appease the South.

Calhoun saw that any state could protect its interests through nullification. 3 Republican Platform: Slavery was to continue in states where it already existed. Limit the spread of slavery to the western territories. Election of 1860 Lincoln is NOT on many southern state ballots. Lincoln wins with 180 Electoral College votes

4 Southern Reaction Election of Lincoln is a crime against the South and slavery. Believe Republican agenda is to prohibit slavery throughout the U.S. Build up state militias in response to Brown’s raid December 20, 1860 – South Carolina secedes from the Union.

5 Declares that secession is unconstitutional. Warns the South that the Union will use the military to preserve the Union. Lincoln focuses on a small garrison in Charleston, SC as an example of Union resolve.
