According to the APA Publication Manual, some online books, journals, and magazines have added “digital object identifier (doi) numbers to their bibliographic information because such numbers provide a “means of persistent identification for managing information on digital networks” (p. 188). Please see the next slide for a sample doi number. A Word about DOI’s and URL’s
3
A Sample DOI Number Here is an example DOI number found on a database article.
4
If there is no doi number present, “[p]rovide the home page URL [web address] of the journal or of the book or report publisher. If you are accessing the article from a private database, you may need to do a quick web search to locate this URL” (pp. 191-192). What to Do If There Is No DOI Number

Citing an Online Journal, Magazine, or Newspaper Article Online journals, magazines, and newspapers can easily be found in academic databases. An academic database is merely a collection of electronic versions of journal, magazine, and newspaper articles. The documents in an academic database have already been published in a journal, magazine, or newspaper. Many academic databases (though not all) also have “citation generators” which will create your References entries for you. However, be aware that sometimes these References entries have a few flaws in terms of spacing, hanging indents, and capitalization. A Reference entry for an online journal, magazine, or newspaper article requires the following information: Last Name, First and Middle Initials of Author (Date of publication) Title of article Name of Journal, Magazine, or Newspaper italicized Volume number(issue number) Source for image: richkyoung.wordpress.com Pages Digital object identifier (called a doi) or the web address of the journal’s publisher (not both). If you aren’t sure how to access academic database articles or use the citation generators, click here. click here.

Journals Versus Magazines Source for image: iol.utexas.edu JournalsMagazines Journal articles generally have been peer reviewed. This means that the articles have been studied by a panel of professionals in a particular field to assure the accuracy and credibility of the information presented. Magazine articles generally have received some screening but often are not written by experts in the field. Rather, many magazine articles are written by freelance or staff writers who research and write about a wide variety of topics. Journal articles are usually longer and more complex than magazines that are read for everyday fun. Magazine articles generally cover just a few pages or even fewer and are written at roughly a tenth to twelfth grade reading level, so the articles aren’t overly complicated. Journal articles generally have few pictures or other images unless the graphics are part of a particular article (such as a pie chart or bar graph showing statistical information). Magazines generally have lots of colorful graphics and are printed on glossy paper. Journals usually have little advertising unless the advertisements are directly related to the field, such as advertisements for professional conferences and other scholarly books and publications. Magazines generally have a lot of different advertisements, usually in relation to the readership of the magazine such as ads for women’s clothing, makeup, and jewelry targeted for readers of fashion magazines
