4 To carry out these management functions most effectively, managers need particular skills: -Technical skills - Interpersonal skills - Conceptual skills - Diagnostic skills - Communication skills - Decision-Making skills - Time management skills

5 1/ Technical skills: -Understanding the specific kind of work -To know how to perform the tasks assigned to the supervisors -Important to first-line managers -Important for training subordinates and answering question about work problems

6 2/ Interpersonal skills: Manager spend considerable time interacting with subordinates inside and outside the organization, he needs the ability to : -Communicate with groups and individuals -Understand them -Motivate them -Get along with them -Work with supplies, customers and investors

7 3/ Conceptual skills: Manager needs the ability to : -Think in abstract -Understand the overall workings of the organization and its environment -Understand how all the parts of the organization fit together -View the organization as a hole This allows managers to think strategically, to see the “big picture” and to make decisions that serve the overall organization

8 4/ Diagnostic skills: Manager needs the ability to : -Visualize the most appropriate response to a situation - Analyse a problem by studying its symptoms and then developing a solution

9 5/ Communication skills: Manager needs the ability to : -Effectively convey ideas and information to others -Effectively receive information from others These skills enables the manager to: - transmit ideas to subordinates to know what is expected - coordinate work with peers and colleagues to work well - keep higher-level managers informed about the situation - oral, sms, letters, reports can be a tool for communication

10 6/ Decision-Making skills: Manager needs the ability to : -Correctly recognize and define problems and opportunities and to select the appropriate action to solve problem -Make right decision most of the time (impossible all the time) -Recognize quickly their mistake in case of bad decision and recover by the good decision

11 7/ Time-Management skills: Manager needs the ability to : -Prioritize work -Work efficiently -Delegate appropriately - If a work has been postponed, this indicate that a priority may get neglected

12 Management can be considered as a Science and an Art Management as a Science: -Rational -Logical -Objective -Systematic -Use quantitative models -Scientific approach to solve problems

13 Management can be considered as a Science and an Art Management as an Art: - Intuition -Experience -Instinct -Personal insights
