2
Essential Components of an Instrument 1. Signal generator Signal which reflects the presence and amount of analyte present. This may be an ion of the analyte itself or some attenuation of the signal due to the anayte being present 2. Detector (input transducer): Converts one kind of signal to another. Most detectors convert analytical signals to current or voltage
3
Essential Components of an Instrument 3. Signal Processor: Signal is modified to make it more convenient to be read by readout device. Signal may be filtered, amplified, converting from analog to digital, etc. 4. Readout device: Transducer which converts processed signal into a signal which is understandable to humans

Identify: The signal generator in a thermometer The readout on a thermometer Which part of an instrument is a speedometer? The signal generator in a UV spectrometer The input transducer in a UV spectrometer What is the transduced signal in a UV spec? What is the signal processor in a UV spec? What is the readout in a UV spec?

Airline Security Design an instrument that can tell if there is anything “dangerous” in a suitcase. You know, of course, that not every metal object is dangerous, nor is every dangerous object metal. Pay special attention to the signal generating part of the instrument.

Methods of Detecting Analytes 1.Physical means Masscolor refractive index thermal conductivity 2. With electromagnetic radiation (spectroscopy) absorptionemissionscattering 3. By an electrical charge electrochemistry mass spectrometry
