Chapter 4

 Basal Cell Carcinoma  Squamous Cell Carcinoma  Malignant Melanoma  Kaposi Sarcoma

 Least malignant (non cancerous)  Most common skin cancer  Occurs most often in sun-exposed areas  Shiny, dome-shaped nodules  Central ulcer with pearly edge  Slow growing

 Treatment – surgical removal ◦ 99% curable if removed

 Scaly  Reddened papule  Will form a shallow ulcer with raised border  Most often occurs on: ◦ Scalp ◦ Ears ◦ Dorsum of hands ◦ Lower lip  Grows fast  Metastasizes to adjacent lymph nodes if not removed  Epidermal cancer ◦ Believed to be sun induced

 Treatment ◦ Surgical removal and/or radiation ◦ If caught early chance of cure is high

 Cancer of melanocytes  Occurs anywhere there is pigment  Deadly  Brown or black patch / may occur in moles  Metastasizes to lymph and blood vessels quickly

 50% survival rate  Treatment ◦ Wide Surgical excising ◦ Chemo/radiation = immunotherapy

 Kaposi sarcoma is a cancer that causes lesions (abnormal tissue) to grow in the skin; the mucous membranes lining the mouth, nose, and throat; lymph nodes; or other organs. The lesions are usually purple and are made of cancer cells, new blood vessels, red blood cells, and white blood cells. Kaposi sarcoma is different from other cancers in that lesions may begin in more than one place in the body at the same time.  http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/treatment/kaposis/Patient/page1

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends everyone use sunscreen that offers the following: Broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB rays). Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 30 or greater. Water resistance.

 SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It is a measure of UVB protection and ranges from 1 to 45 or above.  A sunscreen with an SPF of 15 filters 92% of the UVB. Put another way, a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 will delay the onset of a sunburn in a person who would otherwise burn in 10 minutes to burn in 150 minutes. The SPF 15 sunscreen allows a person to stay out in the sun 15 times longer  http://dermatology.about.com/cs/skincareproducts/a/spf.htm

A = Asymmetry One half is unlike the other half. B = Border An irregular, scalloped or poorly defined border

C = Color Is varied from one area to another; has shades of tan, brown or black, or is sometimes white, red, or blue. D = Diameter Melanomas usually greater than 6mm (the size of a pencil eraser) when diagnosed, but they can be smaller. E = Evolving A mole or skin lesion that looks different from the rest or is changing in size, shape or color.
