1
Photosynthesis & Energy
2
PLANTS also known as Producers – Autotrophs make their own food through PHOTOSYNTHESIS
3
6H 2 O + 6CO 2 C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 Reactants products Plants use reactants to make sugar for energy and growth Conservation of mass: reactants are not destroyed, just change form
4
Plants get…. Water from the soil through roots & CO2 from the air through leaves to make glucose
5
Check yer understanding…. Plants are called producers…why? Where do producers get their energy from? What is a synonym for producer? What are the REACTANTS in photosynthesis? What are the PRODUCTS in photosynthesis? Where do plants get water from? What sugar do plants make? What is the chemical formula for glucose?
6
ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) is the energy used by living cells
7
ATP three phosphates bound together P~P~PP~P~P Energy is stored in the bonds
8
When a phosphate is lost a great amount of energy is released and becomes ADP (adenosine diphosphate)
9
ATP releases P = ADP ATP is like a rechargeable battery ADP is like a dead battery
10
Check yer understanding…. What is your cell’s “energy molecule” called? Where is the energy in ATP stored? What is the ultimate source of all energy on earth? How is ATP’s energy released?
11
Photosynthesis is Production of chemical energy (ATP) from light energy
12
Photosynthesis takes place in chloroplasts containing pigment chlorophyll
13
Photosynthesis Has 2 reactions One requires light One does not require light
14
Light dependent rxns makes ATP in thylakoid membrane ATP goes to the Light independent (dark) rxns to make sugar in the stroma
15
Check yer understanding…. In what organelle does photosynthesis take place? What are the two reactions of photosynthesis called? In what reaction is ATP MADE? In what reaction is ATP BROKEN DOWN In what reaction is sugar MADE?
