What is Orienteering? Orienteering is a challenging outdoor activity using a COMPASS and a detailed TOPOGRAPHIC MAP to through a series of checkpoints called CONTROLS as quickly as you can. IT IS A RACE!!!! It is extremely popular around the world

History of Orienteering Orienteering is a competitive sport that originated as a military activity in Scandinavia in the early 1900’s

History of Orienteering 1919- Major ERNST KILLANDER of Sweden devised a cross-country competition where runners not only ran a course but had to choose there own routes using a map and compass. Considered the Father of Orienteering

History of Orienteering 1941-1943- Orienteering events were held at Dartmouth College- **First events in Uniited States. 1961- The International Orienteering Federation was formed 1966- The US Military Academy at West Point began intramural orienteering competitions. 1988- Orienteering was recognized by Olympic Committee as a Class C sport Currently there are over 60 major Orienteering clubs in the United States

Orienteering Terms Topographic Map - Map showing natural and/or physical features of a landscape, including altitude contours. Also called contour map.

Orienteering Terms Control Point – It is a marker you must find while navigating any course utilizing a map and compass

Magnetic North The northerly direction in the earth's magnetic field indicated by the north- seeking pole of a compass needle.

Orienteering here at NP High School Due to the fact that we do not have maps of our school grounds we will be doing a modified form of orienteering called “Fixed Point Orienteering” We will teach you how to read a compass We will teach you how to pace We wil teach you how to do a triangle walk We will have you navigate for time 5 different fixed point courses using different controls
