Greek Religion -Religion affected every aspect of Greek life -Temples dedicated to gods & goddesses -Ritual ceremonies often involved prayer and gifts to gods or goddesses -Festivals developed to honor gods & goddesses -Olympia to honor Zeus -Delphi to honor Apollo -1 st games held at the Olympic festival in 776BC

Greek Religion -People had desire to know the will of the gods -Made use of oracle (sacred shrine where a god reveals future through priest(ess). -Oracle at Delphi -Ex. Priestess listens to questions from people (responses often puzzling or interpreted in more than 1 way) -Romans adopt Greek gods -Greek gods and goddesses appear in literature

Classical Greek Arts & Literature -About expressing eternal ideals (the human being, reason, beauty, harmony) -temples & sculptures dedicated to gods -Most famous in Athens (ex. Parthenon for Athena) -Outdoor theaters in religious festivals -Dramas (called tragedies) written in trilogies (3’s) -Oedipus Rex: Oracle of Apollo tells him he will kill his father & marry his mother. Oedipus does everything he can to stop it, but it happens.

Greek Philosophy -Organized system of thought (Greek meaning “love of wisdom”) -Rational thought; trying to explain universe -Ex. Pythagoras said understanding universe found in music & numbers -Sophists were traveling teachers; claimed it was beyond the human mind to understand the universe -Highly valued rhetoric (art of persuasive speaking) -Valued the art of arguing both sides of an issue

Greek Philosophy - Socrates was a critic of the Sophists; left no writings only ones by Plato his pupil -Goal of education to improve the individual -Socratic method- teaching by presenting question then lead them to find answer -Convicted of corruption -Plato distrusted democracy -Live in rational & just manner -Aristotle was Plato’s pupil at the Academy -Believed people’s happiness is tied to their behavior
