Stewardship Living Marine Resources Marine Environmental Protection
Unclassified Living Marine Resources Marine Environmental Protection Living Marine Resources = The nation’s waterways and their ecosystems are vital to the country’s economy and health. The Coast Guard helps stop the degradation of our ocean’s natural resources associated with maritime activities. This includes ensuring that marine species, such as whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, sea lions, and walruses, are protected. The Coast Guard also enforces fisheries laws and regulations. In an average day, the Coast Guard: Boards 13 commercial fishing vessels to ensure compliance with fisheries laws; Sector New York patrols an area out to sea at the entrance to the harbor that contains sensitive spawning grounds for a number of endangered/pressured species. Marine Environmental Protection = Prevents and responds to oil and chemical spills into waterways Stops unauthorized ocean dumping Averts the introduction of invasive species In 2010, the Coast Guard: Completed over 24,400 container inspections, identifying more than 4,100 deficiencies that led to 750 cargo or container shipments being placed on hold until dangerous conditions were corrected. Performed over 14,800 inspections at facilities to ensure compliance with safety, security, and environmental protection regulations. Over 5,400 deficient conditions were identified. ‘ On April 20, 2010, the mobile offshore drilling unit Deepwater Horizon exploded and sank, killing 11 workers. The accident led to the largest oil spill in U.S. history and was the first incident to be declared a SONS. The lessons learned from the Deepwater Horizon response continue to be collected, and will guide and shape the Marine Environmental Response (MER) program for many years to come. In an average day, the Coast Guard inspects: Responds to and investigates 10 pollution incidents 29 vessels for compliance with air emissions standards 68 containers to enforce regulator standards 45 facilities ensure regulator standards are followed Unclassified
