Managing Human Resources Describe compensation and benefits plans Recognize the goals of performance management By PresenterMedia.comPresenterMedia.com

Do Now How much of a salary do you anticipate earning once you graduate college or when you’re ready to enter the workforce?

Human Resources Activities Wages and Benefits The amount a company pays employees directly and spends to provide employee benefits is part of HRM’s budget. Responsible for developing a pay system that classifies jobs according to levels and pay ranges. With your Restaurant project partner, research the salaries for the positions needed. Refer to your recruiting/staffing worksheet from prior class Benefits that companies offer such as insurance and vacations are not legally required but many companies provide them

Human Resources Activities Performance Improvement Employees must be trained and educated to ensure high quality and efficient work. Once hired, employees receive an orientation to the company and training to make sure they are successful in the new job. If evaluation indicates employee is not performing well, the company must provide support to improve his/her performance Employees may be promoted or transferred to a new job in the company. If company decides to lay people off, HR will help the terminated employee prepare for a new job.

Termination – ends the employment relationship between a company and an employee discharge that ends employment due to inappropriate work behavior (Your’eFired!) layoff, which is a temporary or permanent reduction in the number of employees due to changing business conditions SLIDE 5

Human Resources Activities Performance Management Employee’s performance is evaluated by management to make sure expectations are met. If performance problems are discovered, they must help employees improve and provide training if needed. New method of performance evaluation is “360-degree feedback” This method gathers feedback from a broad range of people with whom the employee works rather than just the employee’s manager.

Human Resources Activities Performance Management (cont’d) Employees receive feedback from coworkers. The responses are anonymous, so the person evaluated doesn’t know who specifically provided the information. Information is summarized, a report is prepared and a performance improvement conference is held with employee, manager. What are the possible advantages and disadvantages of using a 360-degree system for performance evaluation?

Activity Each row will receive the following tools: construction paper, scissors, tape and a stapler. Your job is to work with your group to create a tower. After you have completed the tower, you will each rate your partners on a scale of 1-10 on their “work performance” during the project (1 being the worst, 10 being the best)
