3 3 Background The Cooperative Society was originally founded in 1844 in Toad Lane Rochdale by a group of 28 pioneers. It has now grown to become the largest consumer co-operative in the UK, with 6.5 million customers. Cooperative Financial Services (CFS) form part of the umbrella organisation, The Cooperative Group. CFS was formed in 2002, bringing the Co-operative Bank, Co-operative Insurance Services and Smile internet bank under common leadership. By constantly interacting with our customer base and shaping our business around them, Cooperative Financial Services has become one of the most highly regarded financial institutions in the world. The Cooperative Group has continually expanded and has diversified into varying sectors and markets. In 2009 proposals announced to merge with the Britannia Building Society. On the 29 th April the Britannia Membership approved the recommendation and the merger formally took place on 1 st August 2009. This created a business with £70 billion of assets, 9m customers, 12,000 employees, 300 branches and 20 corporate centres.
