WOMEN ATHLETES? Unacceptable because athletes wore very little clothing Women, foreigners, criminals, and slaves were considered second class citizens Athletes were the BEST at everything, trained in military.

AN EXCEPTION Kallipateir Punishment for a woman attending the Olympics was to be thrown off mount Typaeum. Kallipateira, disguised herself as a trainer so she could watch her son compete. She had trained him following her husband’s death. Since her father, three brothers, nephew, and son were Olympic victors, the officials pardoned her in honor of her victorious family. When her son won her identity was revealed.

ANCIENT OLYMPIC TRIALS Every athlete had to arrive one month prior to the start of the games. The month prior to the start of the ancient games served as time which the judges selected who would and would not compete. Athletes could not withdraw from competition. The Hellanodikai, "judges of Greeks," or officials, imposed fines or corporal punishment on athletes who did not follow the rules. They were assisted by a special police force called the alytarches. An athlete could not pay a fine, his hometown paid it for him.

Tonya Harding vs Nancy Kerrigan 1994 OLYMPICS Kerrigan was struck in the knee with a metal baton, leaving her injured and unable to compete. Tonya Harding, skated to victory. As both women prepared to compete in the 1994 Winter Olympics, rumors began circulated that Harding paid the attackers!

OLYMPIC BADMINTON CHEATING 8 Chinese Olympic Badminton Athletes expelled for cheating! Chinese top seeds Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang, needed to lose to win a gold and silver, which they then attempted to do. Sensing this their opponents, Jung Kyung-eun and Kim Ha-na of South Korea, tried to lose too, but failed. Then the next pairs, from South Korea and Indonesia, played to get beat. A very genteel crowd turned ugly and with good reason. CHEATING
