Collaboration is at the heart of the Academy Regionally, Nationally, Globally The more advanced, the farther & fewer are collaborators Networks are essential to the new conduct of science: data & compute-intensive science Dispersed sources of data, storage, analysis, modeling In every discipline: Physics, Chem, Math, Sociology, Medicine, Climate, Music Networks are essential to instruction delivery & learning Online content delivery, testing & learning, research, MOOCs Performance is critical and growth is exponential Data movement : packet size and speed Analysis must scale with the data Security cannot be sacrificed for performance The Motivation
