TEAM UP! FOR FAN AND PUMP SAVINGS It can be as easy as replacing an old drive belt.

Why should we care?  For the environment  For the bottom line

 For the environment  Replacing a worn-out drive belt can drive big environmental gains. Why should we care?

 For the bottom line  Installing variable speed drives can result in energy savings of 40 to 60 percent.

Fans and Pumps  Fans provide the motive force to move air against the resistance of an air-conveying system.  Pumps provide the motive force to move liquids against the resistance of a piping system and against changes in elevation.  Both use electric motors and drives.

What can we do?  Housekeeping  Low-cost opportunities 3.Retrofits

What can we do? 1. Housekeeping n Inspect and maintain fans and pumps. n Check and adjust belt drives regularly. n Correct excess fan noise and vibration. n Clean and lubricate fan components. n Clean or replace air filters regularly. n Clean ductwork, and fix duct and component leaks.

What can we do? 1. Housekeeping (cont.) n Clean pump impellers, and repair or replace if eroded or pitted. n Maintain clearance tolerances at pump impellers and seals. n Shut down fans and pumps when not needed.

What can we do? 2. Low-cost opportunities n Streamline air-duct connections to reduce losses. n Optimize airflow, by balancing dampers in their maximum open positions for balanced air distribution.

What can we do? 2. Low-cost opportunities (cont.) n Replace packing-gland pump seals with mechanical seals, which require far less pump power. n Trim the pump impeller to match system flow rate and head requirements.

What can we do? 3. Retrofits n Add variable speed motors and drives so the flow of air or water can be adjusted to changing requirements. n Replace outdated units with more efficient and correctly sized equipment.

What can we do? 3. Retrofits (cont.) n Decentralize a major system into sub-systems that serve their own specific requirements. n Control the ventilation system with ultrasonic occupancy sensors – this saved one manufacturer 50 percent in fan operating costs.

What can we do? 3. Retrofits (cont.) n Install a computerized energy management control system. n Install variable voltage, variable frequency inverters to allow motor speed to be continuously varied to meet load demand – power savings range from 30 to 60 percent.

How can we do it? We have the people. We have the tools. oee.nrcan.gc.ca/industri al

Thank you Together we can make it happen. It’s good for the environment. It’s good for the bottom line.
