Application Service Provider provide software and hardware solutions models vary widely marketplace is volatile used for cost containment and migration from legacy systems ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal Evolving Technologies Committee: Marcia Deddens

Application Service Provider costs are often higher than expected data standards are required for security selection process is complex and requires peer institution consultation Evolving Technologies Committee : Marcia Deddens ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

Personal Digital Assistant Opportunities handheld device for personal productivity smaller, more mobile and less expensive than laptop synchronizes with desktop and central applications wireless enhancement provides access to email and web Evolving Technologies Committee : Linda Deneen ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

Personal Digital Assistant The Wireless Connection personal area network — infrared, Bluetooth local area network — 802.11b, 802.11a wide area network — commercial WANs, convergence with cell phones Evolving Technologies Committee : Linda Deneen ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

Personal Digital Assistant Challenges limited screen size and computing power significant support issues difficult integration with some desktop environments and central applications cost, effectiveness and security of wireless Evolving Technologies Committee : Linda Deneen ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

Personal Digital Assistant Applications for Higher Education monitoring scientific or medical equipment access to web-based instructional materials complements, doesn’t replace, the personal computer Evolving Technologies Committee : Linda Deneen ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

Unified Communications What does it mean? single application for email, voice mail, fax (unified messaging) plus integration of instant messaging, telephony, video conferencing, paging and others access from any stationary or portable device with appropriate transformation and filtering Evolving Technologies Committee : Rich Kogut ASPs PDAs UnifiedComm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

Unified Communications Opportunities improved individual productivity for initiating/receiving communications and maintaining address books ability to manage level of “intrusion” with message filtering, forwarding and transformation capabilities complete integration of mobile communication potential cost savings in unified, standards-based infrastructure Evolving Technologies Committee : Rich Kogut ASPs PDAs UnifiedComm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

Unified Communications Challenges disparity in directory, addressing and authentication models for different types of communication; security difficulty of integrating proprietary services; in vs. out-source choices plethora of mobile devices; ownership issues; mixing/separating personal and business communications timing and choice of major technology upgrades Evolving Technologies Committee : Rich Kogut ASPs PDAs UnifiedComm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

Public Key Infrastructure Emerging preferred technology for digital IDs and signature Trusted communications for distance learning, access to libraries, financial aid, grants administration, research, licensed services, e-business Available now in commercial products and services Evolving Technologies Committee : Mark Luker ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

Public Key Infrastructure Requires institutional directory services, policies, business practices Coalition developing standards and models for higher education Trials of the “Higher Education Bridge” for trusted communications across higher education and the federal government now under way Evolving Technologies Committee : Mark Luker ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

webPads What are they? portable wireless-enabled browser with touch screen, battery & wireless LAN fit in between PDAs and laptops typically rely on backend server storage plus web-enabled applications devices offering low-cost web access Evolving Technologies Committee : Jeff McDonell ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

webPads What’s happening? no known campus trials (although University of Southern Queensland, Australia, trial starts late this year) requires robust wireless LAN infrastructure (typically shared 11Mb IEEE 802.1b) early models now shipping in post- beta, still relatively expensive compared to PDAs + wireless cradles or laptops + wireless LAN cards Evolving Technologies Committee : Jeff McDonell ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

webPads Who’s in this space? vendors such as QUBIT, DT Research, Sony, Fujitsu, Honeywell, Airspeak are active (see paper for full list of URLs) several vendors have models under development (e.g. Cisco, Compaq, IBM, LG, Intel, National, Philips, Microsoft, etc.) Evolving Technologies Committee : Jeff McDonell ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

XML emergence of massive data exchange through the global Internet concomitant emergence of scripting languages: XML, WML, CIDE self-describing concept that accommodates flexibility, collaboration, and eases reuse Evolving Technologies Committee : Laura Moriaty ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

XML opportunities for collaborating among multiple database users business application such as: Student Evaluations research application such as: electronic data research center Evolving Technologies Committee : Laura Moriaty ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

Wireless Wireless is a major factor in changing the way that students, faculty and staff at Universities communicate and gather information around campus. The nature of wireless opens up communication everywhere it is available Evolving Technologies Committee : Frank Steen ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

Wireless While the world of wireless is confusing — particularly because of hype from mobile phone carriers —a defacto campus standard has emerged: 802.11b. This standard is available in public free nets, airports, coffee shops, major corporations and as well as many campuses already. However, 802.11b is shared 11megabit and not considered sufficient for multiuser multimedia. Evolving Technologies Committee : Frank Steen ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

Wireless 3G and 4G mobile phone wireless is potentially revolutionary, but it is late in coming, very expensive, unproven and being quickly eclipsed in potential coverage by 802.11b. Current phone and pager technology is of limited use--such as email only--because it is slow and not always well distributed. Evolving Technologies Committee : Frank Steen ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal

Wireless Equipment for the 802.11a wireless standard is being developed. 802.11a has a higher bandwidth and potential for multimedia. It is not backwards compatible with 802.11b and the equipment currently has a shorter range. It remains to be seen if it becomes a future standard. Evolving Technologies Committee : Frank Steen ASPs PDAs Unified Comm PKI webPads XML Wireless Portal
