17. CHAPTER 2 – Isolationists, Internationalists, and Lend-Lease
Background:
Between 1936 and 1939, Germany takes the Rhineland, Austria, most of Czechoslovakia without any battle.
In September 1939 he demands part of Poland.
Why? – Hitler said the Germans in Poland were being mistreated
What happens? – WWII begins, UK & France declare war on Germany
Meanwhile Germany and the USSR sign a secret Non-Aggression.
Why does this make things easier for Germany?
Russia is a huge power and Germany’s neighbor to the East
1940 – France falls to Germany
The US thus becomes the only country that can help Britain. Should it have helped? How? Why?

18. Lend-Lease
What is it? – the US lends the UK war materials, but doesn’t expect to be paid back, until after the war
Who supported it? – President Roosevelt, Internationalists
Why? – helps the UK without actually declaring war or taking extreme risks, keep the world safe for democracy
Who attacked it? – ISOLATIONISTS
Why? – War in Europe is not our problem
