Fire is the result of combustion (the breaking down of a substance) Combustion – a rapid reaction between oxygen and a fuel (something that releases energy-something that burns)

Controlling Fire Remove one of the components and fire will not occur – Remove fuel – technique used in forest fires – Remove oxygen – apply water, foam, flour,… – Remove heat – applying water

Home safety Common sources – carelessness – candles, small heaters, kitchen, dryer, cigarettes Working smoke detectors reduce fatalities by half Fire extinguishers work on small fires. – Class A – fires involving wood products, paper,.. – Class B – grease fires, paint thinners,…. – Class C – electrical fires – Class D – highly reactive metals (uses dry chem)
