Plagiarism

Plagiarism: What is it? Types of plagiarism Using an essay you didn’t write Combining essay parts you didn’t write Failing to document Adding so much research that your voice is lost NOTE: Plagiarized papers may not be resubmitted to turnitin.com.

What’s the big deal? Ideas are important People have rights Researchers have responsibilities Academia cares

Policy reminder All plagiarized papers receive a grade of “0” Can result in failure of the course and disciplinary action Plagiarism by omission (accidental) is STILL PLAGIARISM Sound clip

Avoiding plagiarism is easy... Read on...

MLA

Here’s the rule : Cite after ANYTHING that isn’t yours. Sound clip

MLA You “cite” by adding the author’s last name plus the page number: (Gomez 23) (Chaney 14). (Hinkle 333).

MLA Cite direct quotes: Health guru Patricia Smith says that “three daily servings of calcium can help with weight loss” (Smith 232). Sound clip

MLA Cite when you paraphrase or summarize: Drinking calcium is good for weight loss (Smith 232). Sound clip

MLA You should even cite if you just MENTION someone else’s ideas: Drinking milk is a good idea for anyone looking to lose weight, but many owners of power juicers swear by their machines (Smith 232).

MLA Are there any cases when the citation ISN’T author + page number? Internet sites (Ford motors). Dictionary citations (“hatred”) An indirect source (qtd. in Coe 2). Drama/Sacred texts = (3.1.56) or (lines 5-8) or (Gen. 1:1) A work by two authors = (Coe and Robbins 56). There are others as well, but there’s no need to memorize them-- all of this information is in your Harbrace.

MLA And the most common question I’m asked: “But what about internet sites that don’t have authors?”

MLA The answer: All sites must have an author. However, remember an author may be a corporation, group or committee.

MLA Examples General Motors released the Pontiac Solstice in the new horsepower rich GXP version in 2007 (GM). Re-grouting tile countertops usually takes about two hours of labor (about.com).

Tips

MLA citation tips 1. Cite immediately after you type information that came from an outside source. 2. Keep track of your sources. This will make citing and putting together the works cited much easier.

Shortcut Once you cite (Miller 22), you can simply add the page number until you change sources. First time: (Miller 22) 2 nd : (22). 3 rd (23). Etc.

Review Can you answer these questions? What is plagiarism? What happens if you accidentally plagiarize? How do you cite? How do you cite for internet sources?
