2. What is Plagiarism?  Plagiarism is taking another person’s words (written or spoken), ideas, theories, facts (that are not considered general knowledge), statistics, art work, etc. and passing them off as your own.

3. It is NOT okay to…  Change the language of the information you are using and pass it off as your own.

4. You MUST…  Acknowledge the proper source, otherwise it is considered plagiarism.

5. Avoiding Plagiarism Key Rules  When borrowing another person’s words, use quotation marks and include a complete reference (author, name, date, pages, internet site)  Do NOT simply paraphrase another writer’s words and pass them off as your own

6. Just Remember…  Whenever you use any information that is not your own, be sure to reference the source, in other words CITE YOUR SOURCES!!!

7. For Example…  On November 4 th, 2008, the United States made history. An African American, Senator Obama, was voted President Elect. Sixty-one percent of the people who voted for Obama were white. This is milestone for a very racially divided nation.

8.  “Sixty-one percent of the people who voted for Obama were white.”  This statement IS NOT considered “common knowledge”

9. Who said it?  In order to avoid plagiarism you must add before or after the statement who said it!

10. The Correct Way  According to Steve Harvey, sixty-one percent of the people who voted for Obama were white. (Harvey 2008)

11. What happens if I plagiarize?  Plagiarism is punishable by law!  Yes, that means you can be arrested and sentenced to jail, and/or fined.  Most of the time, a teacher will simply fail you for the assignment, however in college you can fail a class for one plagiarized sentence.

14. MLA- Modern Language Association

15. What is MLA?  MLA is a list of guidelines you must use when writing a paper.

16. Why use it?  The MLA guidelines are used to make writing uniform and to help students avoid plagiarism.

17. Where are they?  The MLA guidelines are compiled in the MLA Handbook which can be found in any bookstore, library, or even online.  I will be providing you with the most important guidelines for your Career Research Paper.

18. Setting up a Document  All page margins must be 1”.  All font must be 12 point, Times New Roman. (No italicized or bold font is accepted)  Lines must be double spaced.  Your name, teacher’s name, date, and paper title should be included first and in correct order.  A header must be inserted and should include your last name only and a page number.  Each paragraph should be indented five spaces (TAB).  There should be no extra spacing between paragraphs.

19. Documentation  MLA will help you document your sources. Remember you must tell where you get your information to avoid plagiarism.

20. Paraphrasing  This is when you read information and then put it into your own words.  After you paraphrase something, you must cite your source  Paraphrase (Smith).  (Smith) is the name of the author who wrote what your read

21. Using Quotes  If you want to include a direct quote from someone, you must say:  According to Ms. Laipple, “Seventy- five percent of our class is passing with a B or better.” (Laipple 1).  (Laipple 1) – This is the author’s last name and the page number the information was located.

22. Works Cited  The Works Cited page is the last page of your paper and includes all of the books, articles, and websites you used to write your paper.  This page is set up in a special way

23.  Each entry must be set up according to MLA guidelines.  For the most part you will have the author’s names listed  Last name, first name.  Laipple, Amy.  Smith, Jennifer.

24.  There will be more information that must be included after the author’s name. Things like, the book title, the year published, etc. You will be given this information at a later date.
