Welcome to the Revolution Seeing Everything with Fresh Eyes Four Chairs

Where are you In your spiritual growth?

Where are you In your walk with Christ?

God wants more for us…?

God wants more for us Than we want for ourselves

God knows more about us Than we know about ourselves

God knows better How to live our lives Than we do

Disciples= Mathetes "Learner," "Pupil"

Discipleship is never the goal Jesus is the goal Discipleship that doesn't Lead to Christ's Mission Isn't discipleship

4 Chairs: Three Faulty Forms of Discipleship (Following Jesus)

"I'm there! I'll follow. I LOVE Jesus!"

"I'm there! I'll follow. I LOVE Jesus!" Until…

"I'm good. Everything's cool…"

"I'm good. Everything's cool… OMG! Jesus, I need help!"

Chair 1 "God is all about me and what I want"

Everyone starts here

Who should stay here?

…A man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is the divine power known as the Great Power.”

They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic. But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.

When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them

When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus

Historical Narrative: You don't base doctrine on it Spirit after Baptism Cornelius- Spirit before Baptism

Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit

When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit”

What's his agenda?

Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.

Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin” - Acts 8:9-23

It's all about me It has to be… At the start

The goal: Be happy, Be served Get what I want

The need: Follow the true Jesus Who gave his life for others

The need: Follow the true Jesus Who gave his life for others If it's about me It's not Jesus I'm following

I love setting people straight!

I have a passion for God… More than most people!

Chair 2 "It's about God And how I love him so much"

And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal…

And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.

And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere"

…And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me"

John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.”

But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.”

"We decide who's in and who's out…"

And Jesus sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem.

And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But Jesus turned and rebuked them - Luke 9 (Various)

"It's all about how much I love God And how I get to sit in judgment Of everyone else's faith"

Love for God Without a corresponding compassion for people Is a lie religious people tell themselves

If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen - I John 4:20

Truth is truth But without grace, It's not true discipleship

Truth is truth But without grace, It's not true discipleship Do I want to judge them and feel superior? Or encourage them and serve Jesus?

A Push…

A Push… Who is my neighbor?

Chair 2 "It's about God And how I love him so much"

Goal: Be superior, Sit in Judgement And let everyone know!

The need: Understand that I can't love God If I don't love people

I just love your smile… You're an amazing Christian…

I wouldn't fail the church like she did I just don't think someone like that Should have that position… But I should!

Chair 3 People are either A means to an end Or they're in the way (Self-Seeking)

And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.”

And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?”

And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking…" - Mark 10:35-38

If they sit Who doesn't?

"I love you… But I want what I can get out of this"

Chair 3 is Self-Seeking I'll serve… As long as it meets my needs I'll stab you in the back If it furthers my cause I'll make you look bad If it makes me look good

Peter said to Jesus, "Even if everyone else deserts you, I never will" - Mark 14:29

Chair 3 "People are either A means to and end Or they're in the way"

Goal: Use people, serve myself

The Need: A lifestyle of Footwashing

What Christians should look like…

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy… What we have…

…complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. How we should think…

What it looks like… Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others - Phil. 2:1-4

1- God is about me and what I want 2- I love God and judge people 3- People are there to serve me Or they're in the way

1- God is about me and what I want 2- I love God and judge people 3- People are there to serve me Or they're in the way Which of these guys Will actually reach people for Jesus?

1- God is about me and what I want 2- I love God and judge people 3- People are there to serve me Or they're in the way So which of these people Is a real disciple?

Discipleship is never the goal Jesus is the goal Discipleship that doesn't lead to Christ's Mission Isn't discipleship

"The Son of Man has come to S and to S that which was lost" - Jesus

The church is the Only organization in the world That exists for the needs of it's non-members

Chair 4 It's about loving God and loving people to God's glory Because of God's great love for me

Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms.

And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them.

But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” …

And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening …

So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard”

And when they had further threatened them, they let them go

Who are they doing this for?

Time to Pray!

…they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, “Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.” And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach …

“We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us.” But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men” …

…when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name

And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus - Acts 3-5 (Various)

Who are they doing this for?

Who are they doing this for? Why is it so important?

Chair 4 It's about loving God and loving people to God's glory Because of God's great love for me

Goal: Glorify God By making Disciples

Disciple= mathetes "Learner," "Pupil" Apostle= apostolos "Sent one"

Every disciple except one Becomes an apostle

Discipleship is never the goal Jesus is the goal Discipleship that doesn't lead to Christ's Mission Isn't discipleship

God wants more for us… God knows better how to live our lives…

God made us like this: Our deepest needs are met Not by trying to get our needs met But by loving God and Serving the people He created in his image

Joy comes from seeking What is in the other person's best interests

Chairs 1-3 never produce Apostles on mission for Christ So they are fake forms of discipleship

We are missionaries To a strange culture That won't always embrace Our message Do we love God and people enough To proclaim it anyway?

Is my discipleship about knowledge? Or practice?

Where is my calling?

Have I seen it as a calling? Will I?
