SERMON ON THE MOUNT

Christian Counterculture BEATITUDES SALT + LIGHT JESUS AND THE LAW ARE YOU A MURDERER? WHY AREN’T THERE MORE ONE-EYED CHRISTIANS?

Revolutionary LOVE

It is both most admired and most resented, namely the attitude of total love which Christ calls us to show towards one who is evil (verse 39) and our enemies (verse 44). Nowhere is the challenge of the Sermon greater. Nowhere is the distinctness of the Christian counter-culture more obvious. Nowhere is our need of the power of the Holy Spirit (whose first fruit is love) more compelling. (John Stott)

You have heard that it was said, "Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth." But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

You have heard that it was said, "Love your neighbor and hate your enemy." But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:38-45)

The real test of love is not how we relate to the kind and loveable but in how we relate to the cruel and despicable. (John Stott)

Read vv. 39-42 again. How would you contrast our natural responses with what Jesus expects?

What on earth is accomplished by turning the other cheek, going the extra mile and giving to those who ask? In what situations might Jesus’ commands apply today?

How do we get to be God’s kids?

Does all this mean that Christians are supposed to be doormats for the world to walk on?

How did Jesus himself embody the principles “do not resist an evil person” and “love your enemies”? How in the world can we do the same?

The Disease: Hate Don’t wait. Stop the hate.

The Antidote: Love Homework: Read 1 John

1 John Sampling “Anyone who does not love his brother” is not a child of God (3:10) “We should love one another “ (3:11) “Anyone who does not love remains in death” (3:14) “Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer” (3:15)

1 John Sampling “Let us love one another” (4:7) “Love comes from God” (4:7) We “ought to love one another” (4:11) “God is love” (4:16) “Whoever lives in love lives in God” (4:16) “We love because he first loved us” (4:18)

1 John Sampling “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ yet hates his brother, he is a liar” (4:20) “For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen” (4:20)
