Jesus Founds the Church Chapter 2 Lesson 3

The Church’s Teachings on Jesus Christ Jesus is God the Son, the Second Person of the Trinity, made man (Incarnation = God made man) Jesus is true God and true man As God, Jesus is equal with the Father As man, Jesus is like us in all things but sin Jesus is the mediator between God and man Jesus is the Savior – He redeemed us by his life, death, and Resurrection. He is the pleasing sacrifice of atonement to the Father on behalf of man. He is the perfect victim and the perfect priest. We know his sacrifice was accepted because of the Resurrection Jesus taught with the authority of God and gave us the New Law Jesus performed many miracles, which teach us about God and are signs of Jesus’ Divinity Jesus instituted the sacraments to confer the grace that He won upon the Cross to mankind. With the life of grace, we can live forever with God in heaven

Saint Peter Saint Peter was given the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. Keys are a sign of authority given to a lead steward in the absence of the master. The steward then makes decisions on behalf of the master and acts on his behalf until the master returns.

God Established the Church in Three Stages

Old Testament Times God chose a people, set them apart and established a sacred priesthood to celebrate their liturgy. He set up a hierarchical structure for the people. This structure has a representative, or vicar, who is in charge of the people. For example, Moses lead the Israelites.

Life and death of Jesus Jesus chose the apostles as leaders, taught them about his kingdom, gained merits for the Church by his death and sent the Holy Spirit to guide his Church. He also commissioned the apostles to baptize all nations.

New Testament Days of the Apostles The apostles spread the Gospel to all men and nations.

Deposit of Grace What is it? The Deposit of Grace refers to the graces of salvation won by our Lord by his death and Resurrection. How do we receive it? We receive it through the sacraments.

Deposit of Faith What is it? The Deposit of Faith is the truth revealed by Jesus Christ in his public life and after his Resurrection, but before his Ascension. How do we receive it? It is handed on to us through the apostles and their successors.

Hail Holy Queen Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us; after this our exile, show onto us the blessed fruit of your whom, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.
