Resources of iron & coal Rapidly growing population Disciplined educated work force Large supply of workers Huge home market Large companies served as base for expansion Krupp – steel & weapons Thyssen – steel

4 Science Factors that Marked Germany as an Industrial Giant
Supported research – development in universities Hired trained scientists to solve technological problems in factories

5 Government Factors that Marked Germany as an Industrial Giant
Promoted economic development Issued single currency for Germany Reorganized banking system Coordinated railroads Raised tariffs to protect home industries from foreign competition

6 Bismarck…his foreign policy goals
Wanted to keep France weak & isolated Built strong links with Austria & Russia Respected British naval power, not about to compete

7 Bismarck…his Domestic policy goals
Domestic (at home, with in Germany), Bismarck was known because he wanted to crush all who opposed the imperial state (2nd Reich) Catholic Church Catholics were 1/3 of the German population Bismarck thought their first loyalty was Church, not Germany Kulturcampf (battle for civilization) – goal to make Catholics first loyalty to Germany, not the Church Bismarck’s moves backfired – Catholic Center Party gained strength Campaign against socialists> Social Democratic Party in Germany (had most seats in Reichstag by 1912) Called for parliamentary democracy & reforms for workers Bismarck’s fear – workers would revolt Passed laws suppressing socialist groups Backfired again, so Bismarck backed off 1890’s reforms for workers in Germany Tried to woo workers from socialists Health & accident insurance Retirement benefits

8 In 1888 when William I passed…
His grandson William II succeeded Two years later in 1890, Kaiser William II asked Bismarck to resign as Chancellor, shocked all of Europe William II believed his right to rule came from God

9 Policies Kaiser William II followed
Resisted efforts toward democratic reforms Government services provided Social welfare programs – helped certain groups of people Cheap transportation & electricity Spent lots of money on German military Expanded German navy Built overseas empire
