Plagiarize Let no one else's work evade your eyes Remember why the good Lord made your eyes So don't shade your eyes But plagiarize, plagiarize, plagiarize Only be sure always to call it please "research" Tom Lehrer: Lobachevsky Peer homework help

Plagiarism Plagiarism: using ideas or writing of someone else without giving proper credit Self-plagiarism: the verbatim copying or reuse of one’s own research Both are considered unacceptable in scientific literature Internet makes plagiarism easier to do but also easier to catch!

Data Manipulation Manipulating data in order to deceive others violates both basic ethics and accepted standards of professionalism Could potentially impede progress in the field and harm other research groups Undermines own authority and trustworthiness Can have devastating impact on society as a whole If the work is important people will try to repeat it

Good Record Keeping Maintain an accurate, accessible and permanent record of data Record sufficient detail for others to check and repeat work Notebook with numbered pages, written in ink or computer application Date every entry

Proper use of symbols, logos, trademarks, intellectual property. Employees of an organization using protected symbols must use them correctly. Additionally, the owner must work sufficiently to prevent or correct broad use of its intellectual property rights in the trademark to have it become genericized (not protected) term.

NIU logo Its use is permitted and actually encouraged. However, the rule is that the logo be not altered, be presented in its complete form and in a dignified manner. This one is not to be used Text and the graphics must stay together The color is defined (black and red) and should not be altered

The tower alone would be wrong: The Husky logo is a trademark of the athletic team and cannot be used without permission.

E-mail is evidence mail A Sample Email Policy (for a company) It is strictly prohibited to: 1. Send or forward emails containing libelous, defamatory, offensive, racist or obscene remarks. 22 Pick your e-mail name with care The following is an example of e-mail addresses some people picked (changed slightly) to communicate. Fine, if you write to your friends. But what if you are trying to make a business contact? Do you think the names like these inspire respect? More likely, with ever increasing volume of spam, they will not be even read. 23 Social Networking Web Sites If you used to go to the Bull & Finch Pub for a drink, only the other patrons knew. All of this changed with the various electronic dissemination of information. A lot can be found even if you do not want to. Now, imagine you willfully share your information.

Akira Nakimoto Kurosawa
