What is data? Data represents facts & figures A set of data 2, 4, 3, 5, 6 This has no meaning. Consider: 030877 has no meaning. But expressed as 03/08/1977 it does have meaning, it is a date. Bar codes - Advantages Speed, you can scan many items at the checkout and have the till add up to the total to include discounts. Accuracy, it is estimated that 1 in every 70 million bar codes read incorrectly. Usability, operators can be low skilled, low paid and trained to use systems quickly, customers can even check them selves out. Cost effective, initial hardware and software costs may be high, be return on investment and cost savings are massive in comparison. Bar codes - Disadvantages If bar codes are wrinkled, distorted, inaccessible, ripped or damaged even slightly, the reader can have trouble reading them. Sometimes perfectly good bar codes don’t read leading to frustration, and the cashier manually entering the code, which could be done so in error. In large organisations, where staff turnover is high, training is ongoing and can be costly. Printing the codes requires a high quality printer as dot matric and inkjet printers do not done a good enough job to print them. These can be very detailed…
